FH and I mainly asked by taking ppl out to eat. One large group of the BP (about 12 ppl all at once and asked with a toast-telling ppl to take their time and answer later so it wasn't a public ambush) out at once. Went to PA to ask another...another in NJ during her work break (I owe her dinner- I was there for a wedding so that was the only way to get face-time with her!). FH asked his last GM during breakfast.
The MOH ppl were the only ones we asked quickly and without as much planning but we'll make it up to them! (there are 4 total!). In person but at Wendy's or Starbucks, which isn't too bad overall just not as nice as we wanted.

I asked my lil sis on the phone to be my MOH. I didn't ask my best friend right away because she was just complaining about being in someone else's wedding party. Finally she asked me when I was going to ask her to be a bridesmaid. I told her tomorrow

My SIL's friend asked her BM with a bridal cookie. (Her whole BP was out of town). She mailed them a cookie..looking a bridal gown with a poem attached.

I asked them all over the phone except my MOH (she ASSUMED she was MOH so I didn't even have to ask!) and made up for being lazy at that point by introducing them and putting crowns that I decorated on their heads at my e-party!

I first casually asked them, some on phone, others in person.. but nothing formal. Then I sent the 'Will You be My Bridesmaid' cards to eahc of them. 1 of my bridesmaid's and the junior bridesmaid's didn't know until they got the card.. which I liked better... I wish i kept it all a surprise.. But they all loved the cards.
