How did you find your pet

Original post by julybride44

Maybe this will shed some light on why there are so many animals still dying in shelters. So many people 'buy' rather than adopt, so I'm curious to see what portion are doing what.

It's anonymous, so you don't have to worry!

Actually--I do have to agree with Jess on this point....shelters make it awfully easy for people to get 'pets' for cheap, when they can't can't afford to take care of them afterwards. Also, it allows fighters to get cheap 'bait dogs' for their training.

omg, i used to live in a bad part of Brooklyn and its sooo sad to see how often this happens... (fighting dogs) i didnt even think about that at first.
it seems everyone wants to adopt Pits from shelterws. I know Little Shelter in Huntington wont adopt out to people looking for 'pit bulls'
this is another horrible thing that happens.

(sorry this was so off-topic)

And Nichole.... i won't slam you for having your feelings/opinions. i agree to an extent. i just dont feel that 100% of the blame should be on breeders.... I just get upset that Julybride will never try to see where others are coming from.

GOing back to what lolita said, Little shelter won't adopt out pits to just anyone. Northshore
rARELY GETs pits. A lot of places in the city scan the person very well if they want a pit.

but doen south*memphis animal shelter' will adopt bait dogs and pits to anyone for five dollars and no screening. THat makes me sick!!

OMG thas horrible Regi!!!!

I'm sure alot of the people here in Brooklyn buy from their friends who 'breed' pits. I remember seeing this poor pit being walked... she was pregnant and had a weird growth. And they lived in the PROJECTS. It made me sick.

Unfortunately, this is the absolute norm where I work in the Bronx.....I can't tell you how many times I've locked guys up for this---and it's sad to see the fate of the dog (it's not their fault how they were trained)----but a humane death is usually a better fate than the suffering they sustain in fight after fight. And the beatings they get from their owners if they lose is even worse.

But, for every dog I've witnessed beat--you'll be happy to know that by the time I got through with the perps, they took a trip to the hospital also.

I guess after watching this horrific 'sport' over and over again and seeing SOOO many animals left on the street to fend for themselves or die, it's just reinforced my reasoning behind my rescue efforts....and reminds me everyday of why I love my Kamea and Nelson SOOOOOO much---I saved them...I didn't buy them. They weren't planned....yes, they cost me a lot more money than I have to heal and fix-up, but they were so worth it. And they show me their gratitude each and every day......And I feel that the initial $1000 or so it took for each of them to begin the healing process, was much better spent than on a pure-bred perfect pup.

IMO as long as you provide a loving and caring home, does it REALLY matter where your pet came from (puppy mills aside)?

HOWEVER, i do feel that it is important to not only be knowledgeable about the breed of animal, but also from where the animal is adpoted/bought. when the time comes for us to get a dog, we will most definetly seek referrals from others.

ETA: most likely we will adopt a dog from petfinder (1-2 yrs old) rather than 'obtain' a puppy from a breeder or pet store. it is a personal decision and i would never judge nor chastise someone from doing otherwise.

Re: How did you find your pet

Back to the question at hand. My kittens are brother and sister. I adopted them from a couple who uses the same vet as my parents. Why? Because I knew they were coming from a good home and they were already being treated by my vet. And I didn't need or want a purebred cat. My babies are healthy, happy and adorable!!

I think I would feel differently about a dog and would probably get a purebred from a breeder because dogs come in all shapes, sizes, colors and temperments and I think they vary more than American Shorthaired cats.

My brother got a dog a few years ago and North Shore told him it would only get to be 25 lb and it is 65 lbs!!! I would rather know what I am getting into with a dog.

I agree with a lot of the ladies, here, though, As long as you love and care for the pets, what does it matter (unless you got it by an illegal method, but that is a whole other story)

Re: How did you find your pet

a friend of mines sister actually found my cat and 2 siblings (one had died tho) out in the snow in nov 03. she took the two living ones home and played with them for a bit but then got bored.. her friend took one and the other one was hand fed and cared for by my friends parents.

their other cat didn't like her so they asked me if i wanted her. ive always been allergic to cats but shes so adorable that i wanted to 'give her a try' for a week. and i ended up being fine.

so does this count as an adoption or a rescue? i really have no idea. i guess it was more of a 'takeover'

Both of our cats were strays that we took in. Technically 'they found us'
Right now I have a momma stray in my basement who is about to give birth any day....
I cant help it! There are so many cats in my neighborhood, I want to help them all!!

My sister and I walked into the North Shore Animal League over 12 years ago and found my little Charlie sitting in the corner of his cage, shaking like a leaf cause he was so scared He melted our hearts and we took him home that day. He's been the most incredible dog ever... and will be in my wedding I can't wait!

We were always dog people but my old landlord didn't allow dogs. We babysat a friend's cat a feel in love with her.

So, it turned out that cat's mother had another litter. We took the last two in the litter.

They are the absolute sweetest cats we ever met. They both wound up having asthma and one got very sick last year and almost died. My husband and I think we were destined to care for them.

I got my casey (a dalmatian) from a pet store and she is the best! I love her so much! She is now 12 and showing her age and it makes me so sad to think she may be gone soon! Even though she lives with my dad and I have another dog now!
