How did you find your pet

How did you find your pet

Maybe this will shed some light on why there are so many animals still dying in shelters. So many people 'buy' rather than adopt, so I'm curious to see what portion are doing what.

It's anonymous, so you don't have to worry!

Lukin was from a breeder
Tink was from a breeder
Dharma i adopted
Saffy i rescued
Toby i also adopted/rescued from a shelter

..but i voted 'breeder'.... even though i have done everything EXCEPT buy from a pet shop (and never will)

My aunt's friends dog had puppies and they were getting rid of them. I'm so happy we got Gizmo!

I voted breeder...BUT.... My Boston was the runt - and he was 4 months old and unwanted. He is purebread, no longer a runt, and the best dog EVER and he was under $400. Best decision I've ever made.

I have had 5 dogs since I was born. I have no idea how we got the first one.

But of the other 4, 1 we got from a garage sale (its a long story, but she was the most amazing dog ever),
1 was the runt and they were going to put him down so my dad took him,
1 we got from a pet store (I know what everyone says but I LOVE my dalmatian!)
and our current dog we adopted from Save a Pet!

ETA I didnt vote because I fall into a few categories....and none more than once!

I got my cat (that just passed) from a pound. I would never pay when there are so many animals being put to sleep. JMO because I never intend to show animals, just have them as pets to love and enjoy.

Misiu was adopted, my coworker adopted him from an ad in the paper and then she gave him to me because she found out she was allergic to him.

hmm.... Dharma was originally from a breeder (she's show quality.. not like you can tell from my pix and my lack of face clipping)... but i say i adopted her b/c i got her from someone like Jola.... someone who was allergic.

Satchmo came from a breeder, who is also a family friend. We've had him since he was 8-weeks old and he is an wonderful example of his breed -- stable and loving temperment and a wonderful exercise companion.

Honestly, I'm not quite sure how this poll relates to the number of animals dying in shelters,as the original poster puts it, since most dogs end up in shelters as a result of irresponsible breeding and irresponsible owners and all the ladies on this site seem quite dedicated to their animals. But it is fun to see how everyone ended-up with their dogs.

It relates b/c every animal bought from a breeder or store is one that is not rescued from a shelter...that's why I'm curious!

DH found Xena eating out of a dumpster in the winter of 96. She was just a few weeks old and it was the horrible winter that we had more snow than parts of Alaska, so he took her in. He was only going to keep her for the winter but he grew to love her

So I don't know if she would be considered rescued or adopted?

Re: How did you find your pet

swags.. i'd say you rescued her!!! poor thing!

lesley.. she doesnt understand the joys of having a 'purebred'.. not that having a mix/mutt is BAD, but that you get a certain breed for certain reasons.... she doesnt think there should be breeds at all! don't let her make you feel bad though. you make an excellent point that EVERYONE on here ADORES and LOVES their furbaby to death.. and i think its safe to say most of use spoil our babies rotten!
i gues since they weren't ALL adopted from shelters we are horrible human beings!

but no offense julybride..... but just b/c someones 'buys' a dog from a breeder or adopts from a perons rather than a shelter doesnt mean that its 'killing' animals in shelters... or even a reason WHY there are animals in shelters....

animals are in shelters b/c.....
-irresponsible 'breeding'
-irresponsible owners
-owners die
-ignorant people get animals not thinking about the responsablities that go along with owning an animal
..these are just a few reasons....

You make it out to seem that because I bought Tink that another dog had to die for that. And that I 'bought' Luk that another dog died b/c of that... when that isnt the case at all!!! you make it seem that we decided on BUYING a dog from a BREEDER over BUYING one from a SHLETER. you think that if i didnt get 2 of my dogs from breeders that i wouldve gotten them from shelters.. which is not at all true. i just wouldnt have two dogs at all!!!!!!

i understand that you are all about adopting animals... and believe me that is an excellent thing, but in my opinion you put blame on the wrong people. if you want to educate people/us about adopting rather than 'buying' then fine, post the facts, but do not attack people as that is what you do. (not this thread, but in others you have personally attacked people)

we all love our animals... no matter where they come from.

ask anyone on here and they'll tell you how i am a stickler when it comes to buying dogs from pet shops and backyard breeders and the 'teacup myth'... but i do not attack people personally.. (at least i hope i dont!!!!) i simply post facts so that people know for the next time they think about getting another animal to add to their family. i don't want to make anyone feel bad about where or how they acquired their animal... just so they know for the next time......

i feel as if you TRY to make people feel bad.

eta: once again, i would just like to add that if i didnt get my dogs from their breeders (and i went to a breeder b/c i was looking for something SPECIFIC) then i just wouldnt have them at all. I wouldnt have gotten two OTHER dogs from shelters or elsewhere..... so no dogs 'died' b/c of my choice to get from a breeder....... (i hope this makes sense... its hard to describe my point)

Jess, i COMPLETELY agree with you! Very well said.

Re: How did you find your pet

I feel like my post was what prompted this, and I'm sorry.

My last dog was from a pet store. He was older than all the other puppies and was so drastically discounted because he was too old to be sold to most people. But he was exactly what our family needed - an inexpensive dog that didn't shed. So we paid $200 for a poodle, no papers or anything, that would've probably ended up homeless (or dead) if we hadn't bought him. He lived for 17 years in our home with love and caring, and he gave us more than we ever gave him.

I DO NOT advocate for pet stores - I will never buy another dog from a pet store. But we did, in a manner, rescue Biscut from early euthanasia. We were the only suckers who wanted him!!!!!!!!!

Adoption is a wonderful thing for those who can take just any animal.

All of my furbabies are rescued....I don't believe in any other way. If people would just stop breeding and stop buying from breeders for a certain period of time (7-10 years), maybe we could decrease the population significantly enough, that it would level off to a number that doesn't allow for homeless, abandoned, and over-population. JMO---it would never happen, of course, but one can dream. But unfortunately there are always those people who just have to have a pure bred or nothing else. It doesn't matter their breed, an animal will give you their love and devotion unconditionally.

Re: How did you find your pet

My nasty little evil cat Gunnar was adopted and given to me as a gift 15 years ago....

My adorable little kitten Scout was adopted as a birthday gift to me this year....

I just adopt because I'm too cheap to shell out a ton of money for a cat when I can get one for $75 at a local shelter.
I have an aunt and uncle who breed dogs in Pennsylvania and they love it - they live on a farm and love all of their animals...I don't understand why people are sooo against breeding
