ok i knew one person was giving me money for the shower bc fh told me his aunt called and asked if we wanted a gift or $400 or 500 in cash and fh answered cash. Now i find out today that quite a few of his family members are giving us cash, i mean i know of at least 10 that are doing this. A decent amount of gifts are off my registry but for how many guests we are having i knew something was up and now i know.
What do i say when i open their card with the money, i mean i cant say the amount that'd be weird right? do i just say oh cash gift or what? and do you think the ppl would expect me to say how much? I dont even know what to do. Alot of the old school family members are doing the cash thing so im trying to think how they would want me to do it

so odd though... i rarely see monetary gifts at the shower.
the whole point of registering is for the shower, at least in my experience.
i was surprised too lol, i havent really seen it either. Ive seen maybe 1 or 2 monetary gifts and thats about it.

from the showers ive been to, they didnt open the cards, just the gifts b/c i guess it would be weird. Just thank them as they give it to you i guess. But getting cash is probably better
do you think they'd get mad if i didnt open the card at the shower? these are old school italians so i dont know how they'd feel about that lol. I will open it and say thank you in front of everybody bc then otherwise other guests will think the other maybe didnt give a gift and trust me they'll pay attention to what other family members got me ya know
I dont think they would be made if you didnt open the envelopes...i mean you usually dont open them at the wedding or eparty right?
yeah but the shower is all about just the gifts and if i am opening up gifts and not recognizing they gave something, i think they might not like that.
I guess it depends on when they give the envelope. From what I experience, most people who give monetary gifts either hand it directly to you in the beginning or at the end when they say goodbye...

Definitely, open the card; If I was a guest, and gave you money, I would want people to know I didn't come emptyhanded, but I would only expect a thank you, not to hear the amount. I think most people would be courteous enough to know that when you open a card, and you look at the guest, and say thank you, that it was a monetary gift. Mary MOB
oh yeah i HAVE to open the card so others know they didn't come empty handed hahaha
Perhaps not the best choice of words. Sorry! Everyone feels special, when her gift is acknowledged, and if someone gave a card with money, and it wasn't acknowledged, wouldn't that make her feel badly? Mary MOB

Re: how do i handle this situation RE: shower
i actually got a lot of monetary gifts, but most said 'towards the HM' so i just said '$ for HM' or 'HM registry'
Most ppl will write something in the card like what to use it for ..towards a house...HM shopping, etc.

all the older italian in my father's family , like that you open it up and just read the card and then say cash gift.....def. not say the amount though, i did this at my baby shower.

I am glad you asked this question! I was thinking about what to say esp since I know some guests who already mentioned the monetary gifts.

I would just open the gift, look at that person and say thank you. It's no one's business how much they gave you. That's between you and the gift giver. Everyone will understand that you got money. You don't have to say it was a monetary gift. They'll get it!
