how do i handle this situation RE: shower

ok i knew one person was giving me money for the shower bc fh told me his aunt called and asked if we wanted a gift or $400 or 500 in cash and fh answered cash. Now i find out today that quite a few of his family members are giving us cash, i mean i know of at least 10 that are doing this. A decent amount of gifts are off my registry but for how many guests we are having i knew something was up and now i know.

What do i say when i open their card with the money, i mean i cant say the amount that'd be weird right? do i just say oh cash gift or what? and do you think the ppl would expect me to say how much? I dont even know what to do. Alot of the old school family members are doing the cash thing so im trying to think how they would want me to do it

You simply say that a 'monetary' gift was given and 'Thank You.' I wouldn't mention any value or brag, that would be tacky and i'm sure they'll appreciate your discretion.

GOOD LUCK!

Denise, I think it appropriate to just say thank you for your gift, and not mention the amount, except personally, in the thank you note. Mary MOB

yeah thats what i am thinking, it would be VERY wrong to say the amount ya know i just couldn't do it. I just hope they don't expect it ya know. I know alot of old school people do things differently so i hope me saying a monetary gift will be ok with them. But thank you, yeah ill just say monetary gift. Why couldnt i think of the word monetary

I would just Smile Graciously, don't let anyone see the money and read the card out loud...then look directly at them and say thank you! we really appreciate that so much! nobody needs to know what they gave.

from the showers ive been to, they didnt open the cards, just the gifts b/c i guess it would be weird. Just thank them as they give it to you i guess. But getting cash is probably better

its weird bc i dont remember what happened at other showers when this was done. Most showers i went to there werent many monetary gifts anyways, i remember only very few.

I actually was at a shower very recently so it was fresh in my head and I was impressed by the way she handled it. I have alot of old school ladies in my crew too who all try to outdo each other ((the european crew)) so I know exactly what you mean about them. However, I just don't think it's appropriate b/c it might make me seem unappreciative of the lesser gifts and I wouldn't want to offend anyone.

do you think they'd get mad if i didnt open the card at the shower? these are old school italians so i dont know how they'd feel about that lol. I will open it and say thank you in front of everybody bc then otherwise other guests will think the other maybe didnt give a gift and trust me they'll pay attention to what other family members got me ya know

I would just state that a monetary gift was given- when people gave me cash, check or gift card I just said monetary gift or a nice gift card to ________ store but never the amount.

YES!!!!!!!!!! you nailed it, thats the problem...it is european people and yes one tries to outdo the other, thats what i think i am worried about. I know for a fact about one member who wants to give more than the other. I have to say thank you no matter what in front of everybody. I definitely wont say the amount but thank them, and say we appreciate it very much.

Yes I would just say 'Thank you for your generous gift' and make sure to give them a very nice thank you note.

Re: how do i handle this situation RE: shower

you just say Thank You. It is def. not proper etiquette to announce the amount because...well...because it's no one's business :)

We got a lot of $$ and gift cards for our shower bc a lot of people were from out of state and probably didn't want to lug a gift around to the actual shower. It worked out great though bc we were able to really get what we wanted. Have fun!
