My future sister in law is a jeweler and she said to use windex and a toothbrush-be careful of those sonic cleaners overtime they can loosen the diamond
This is EXACTLY what my jeweler says - she owns a place in the diamond district. The ultrasonic cleans the ring wonderfully, but is dangerous to the diamonds. If there is even a small inclusion, the ultrasonic (with it's little vibrations) will enlarge the inclusion. Also, if you have sidestones that are invisibly set (no prongs), they will be loosened as well. My FSIL has one and cleans her e-ring all the time in it, and she never listens to me when I tell her what the jeweler said...her diamond has been tightened twice already (in 4 years) and she doesn't even wear the ring everyday! PLEASE be careful with the ultrasonic cleaners - use the detergent/windex instead!!!

Re: How do you all clean your ring?
I asked my jeweler about the ultrasonic and said that it was fine and that you should have your ring inspected every year anyway. I used the ultrasonic with just water but it got it amazingly clean when I put some amonnia in it (actually can't BELIEVE it was that dirty!!!!)

Re: How do you all clean your ring?
OK - stupid question - but when you saying dishwashing detergent - do you mean the stuff you put in the dishwasher or the soap you handwash dishes with (like Dawn or Joy) Thanks!

I work in the Diamond Industry and the fact that an ultrasonic cleaner will 'enlarge the inclusion' is just not true. It is true that the vibrations will loosen stones, but any reputable jeweler will check the stones before cleaning your ring anyway...but unless your stone has been 'drilled' which is a highly unethical procedure (it consists of drilling into the diamond near where the inclusion is, inserting silicone, sealing the drill hole and selling the ring as 'flawless' or with less inclusions) there is no way that your stone's natural inclusions will get affected by the vibrations. The ring is in the solution for under 2 minutes and should always be put in a basket to catch any stones that may come lose (if it wasn't tightened). As far as tightening the stones, we should ALL have our rings tightened and checked once a year (every 6 months is best, buy that may get annoying). Checking for cracks on the stone (diamonds do chip ladies), abrasions on the stone, looseness as well as any cracks on the shank (especially if your ring has been sized) and setting issues - this is the recommended maintenance and any reputable jeweler will tell you that. Windex, ammonia, dishwashing liquid, toothpaste, they all work - but I hate to scare you girls when there is no need to. Ultrasonic cleaners ARE safe, it's how EVERY stone at my job is cleaned, it's how we clean all of our customer's rings (and trust me, they would only have the best at where I work) and as long as the stones are cheked prior to cleaning, it is perfectly safe.
Happy to help - sorry for the novel!

Re: How do you all clean your ring?
When I had my rings appraised at the Jewlry Judge the woman there recommended a couple of drops of Joy dishwashing detergant & warm water. Soak the rings for about 10 minutes then clean with a soft toothbrush. Rinse with warm water. Sparkles every time!!!

beautq115....I am so glad your came out great....not that many people know that trick and for mrswask who asked earlier... make sure to use powdered dishwashing detergent for the dishwasher ...fmil says cascade is the best but it probably doesn't really matter

Re: How do you all clean your ring?
I used to use ALL laundry detergent, but it left a blue residue so I began using rubbing alcohol. I also have heard of using a certain type of ammonia

Re: How do you all clean your ring?
He appraised my ring too. he was great! I bought the sonic cleaner from him. It works okay, but I think the liquid soltions are fine.
Soap and water works as well.
Good luck!

Re: How do you all clean your ring?
My jeweler actually suggested I get a small strainer, place the ring in it and hold it in boiling water for a minute or so. The hot water should loosen the dirt. She told me that the liquid jewelry cleansers won't hurt the ring, but don't really do anything to clean the ring either.

Re: How do you all clean your ring?
I usually use Palmolive and warm water...soak the ring then brush it with a soft toothbrush. It works but I think I'm going to try the dishwashing detergent microwave tip. I didn't know that hot water loosened the dirt! I'm a teacher and write with my left had so I come home everyday with a ring full or chalk dust!! Can't wait to use these new tips!

We got my ring appraised there and she told me the same thing!
It works beautifully!

My fmil is an expert on diamonds and she says that the best recipe for cleaning your ring is :
1/4 teaspoon of any dishwashing detergent 1cup of water mix together and put in microwave for 2 min (or until mixture is boiling) drop ring in mixture for about 30 seconds rinse with cold water It comes out absolutely beautiful!!!
Let me know if you try it!
This is what I was told as well.

Re: How do you all clean your ring?
I clean mine at least once a week in the cleaner my jeweler gave me. At least once I month I take it in to him to get cleaned. He always tells me he is so glad that I come in and clean it often, and how amazing it is that so many people don't take care of their ring properly and never get it professionally cleaned.
ETA: He cleans it for free, so I bet most other jewelers would as well.
My mom has always sworn by windex for all of her jewerly.

Re: How do you all clean your ring?
you dont need to get a machine- i am actually worried to put my ring in something like that. you can use a mixture of water and cleaning ammonia. 6 parts water and 1 part ammonia. it cleans the diamond beautifully, and does not hurt the metal -mine is platinum. hope this helps- it is what the professionals use

Re: How do you all clean your ring?
I always use windex... warm water, and a tiny tooth brush... its not as shiney as when you get it steam cleaned from the jewler but it does a pretty good job!

Re: How do you all clean your ring?
I just use a liquid cleaner that comes with a little brush - it works well on my ring because the diamond is in a high setting so it really cleans the underneath :)
