The 'norm' is to invite plus ones for people who are in a long-term, serious relationship. That is what we did, plus we let the BP bring dates if they were single.

From what i've been reading if your guests is in a serious relationship they should be allowed to bring their fiance; boyfriend/girlfriend whatever the title. But if they're single or casually dating it shoudln't be expected that they receive a +1. I especially agree with this if you're inviting a group of people who all know each other and you plan to sit them together then they don't need a date. Even if there are singles mixed in with couples as long as they all know each other that should be fine.

I know someone who was invited to a wedding over the summer w/out a guest; and she just made sure to coordinate her arrival w/another guests who was invited solo that she was friends with and they just hung together for the wedding.

'Proper etiquette dictates it be noted on the envelope to the invitation if a guest is invited. For instance, the invitation should be addressed to “Mr. Joseph Smith and Guest” if Mr. Smith is allowed a date. If not, only the name of the invited will be written. Technically, the only time a significant other is invited is if the couple is married, engaged or living together.'

I think this is the best way to go about it!

As much as we don't want to to save money, we are inviting everybody with guest. We feel that it is wrong to not do this. JMO

At the start I had everyone (single that is) with a guest. As the GL started getting a little out of control, FH and I decided that only if you are in a serious relationship, we will give you a guest. Like he said for his co-workers and for his friends from college, they don't really need to bring dates b/c those guys will just hang out with themselves anyway and keep each company. We still have to completely finish his side of the GL before we actually make final decisions though.

People engaged, married, or in serious relationships. Honestly, it made things stressful and some people did get insulted that weren't invited with a guest. A few even responded with a guest who weren't invited with one and we had to call them and tell them they couldn't bring a guest - so akward. But our wedding was huge and we really didn't have a choice but to do it this way. We really thought people would be much more understanding about the whole thing.

I originally put everyone w a guest until my guest list was around 50+. Sooo my mom suggested only put a +1 if they are in a serious relationship, engaged, or married.

We're putting pretty much everyone with a guest. Most are married, engaged, or in serious relationships. So for the few left over, I feel bad not putting +1. I think some wont bring the +1 (hopefully!)

yea fh and i are basically making a rule that if ur not in a serious relationship (like 4-6 months or whatever) ur not going to be getting an '& guest' on ur invitation......

We only invited people who were married, engaged or in a serious relationship with guests with the exception of DHs siblings. We invited over 300 people and had to cut somewhere.

I am inviting any single person on the list with a guest. I think that is the fair thing to do. For the most part, people are not going to just take a random person with them, the will probably only take a guest if it is a significant other.
