how do you feel about sunday weddings?

Original post by Kara and Todd

I am curious to know how people feel about Sunday weddings.

I know a Saturday night is ideal, but it's starting to bother me that I'd have to pay a premium for essentially the same service.

If we had it on a Sunday, we'd start a bit earlier and maybe do a 5pm CH and end the party at 10, so people can still get home at a reasonable hour. (Current plan was 6-11 or 6:30-11:30 for Sat night) It would be easier to book our church, too, as the demand is lower. We'd also be able to start the ceremony at almost any time we want because we wouldn't have to be working around the Saturday 5pm mass... (Latest we could have the ceremony would be like 3 or 3:30 which leaves 3 hours before the CH starts...)

We'd also easily be able to afford our dream place, instead of paying more than we really want to... It's still in our budget to afford this place on a Sat night, but we're REALLY trying not to go broke over this wedding. We want to buy a home and still have a life and be able to go out, etc. between now and the wedding...

As far as OOT guests, the way I see it is that they take the same amount of time off of work (Instead of having to take Friday off, they'd have to take Monday)... Most of our parents friends (and our parents) are or will be retired by then.

Anyway, this was the latest suggestion, so I'd like to get an honest gage from people. I've never been to a Sunday wedding, so I'm curious to hear from those who have. Did people *really* not have as much fun b/c of work the next day?

Any thoughts would be appreciated - and please be honest. I won't be offended if you think it's a bad idea. I really want to weigh the pros and cons!

TIA!

Assuming you decide against the saturday night wedding, I personally prefer a Sunday evening wedding (which is what we chose) to a Friday evening wedding for the following reasons:

1. I don't have to rush home/leave early from work to get to the church or RH (assuming it is not a close friend)

2. If the wedding is a good friend's, I would rather take the following Monday off from work to recover from partying than take the Friday off to prep for the party that evening

3. I think more guests would be able to attend the church/ceremony on a Sunday than on a Friday since most people work (some of our guests are blue collar workers and have to work saturdays as well)

Like the other posters above said...the people who truly want to be at your wedding and enjoy won't be sticklers about the day you choose. They will come and have a great time. If the sticklers start complaining once they realize what day your event is, they should stay home because why would you want people like that to participate on your special day.

Remember people always complain and unfortunately no matter how hard you try you can't make everyone happy....I am coming to slowly realize that myself.

Hope that helped!

This is EXACTLY how I feel about it!
We're actually doing a Saturday during the day (and not because it started at $50 cheaper/pp than saturday night! but just because we always envisioned a day wedding on the beach!). If I had to choose between a Friday and Sunday night, I'd probably choose Friday!

hey kara! we're having a sunday wedding over the memorial day holiday but we're accounting for the fact that ppl get monday off.... for the sunday weddings that i've been to, generally ppl leave early and don't party as hard but i think if u move the timetable up as u suggested, that should cure it. i definitely think that the sunday pricing is well worth it and if your guests are close to you, they will have just as much fun and have just as much of a celebratory spirit no matter what day of the week your wedding is!

To be completely honest with you, I would much prefer a Friday night wedding over a Sunday night. Friday night is the kick off to a weekend and I feel like people are more likely to have a good time without worrying about how much their drinking or what time it is. I agree with you on the fact that the premium just for the saturday is ridiculous but would look into a Friday before a Sunday. JMO

Re: how do you feel about sunday weddings?

I think my problem with Friday night over Sunday is that I'm a big firm lawyer -- as are many of my friends. We routinely work 60-80 hours a week, so it's not always easy to get out of the office early on a Friday and we're all wiped out by the end of the week. (I'm atypical going into workr eally early am -- most lawyers go in later and stay later at night) Also most work in the city, so they would have to leave even earlier to commute back to LI to get ready for the wedding... But I realize this is a different perspective than most -- and the vast majority of guests aren't lawyers. It's just how I view the Friday / Sunday distinction.

The other consideration is that many OOT family members / BP members would have to take more time off work to make a weekday RD and a weekday reception.

Neither is ideal, and Sat night will probably be what we wind up with... Just trying to really think through all the options.

Then again, I know people who really want to be there will find a way to be there.

I'm just trying to think through all the options...

I've been to a Sunday afternoon into evening wedding and I can honestly say that I prefer Saturday night weddings. That's all I'm going to say. Don't want anyone to get offended. JMHO

I dont know if this helps..but we choose the Sunday of a holiday weekend (labor day) and it worked out great!!! some places will still give you a Sunday price even though it is a holiday weekend....it may be worth checking out!

I'm not going to get offended. I prefer it, too!

I'm considering it to see if it's worth the savings in money to do it on an off day.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind going to a Sunday wedding!! I've been to a couple of Sunday Night Weddings and they are just as fun, at least to me. I know some people can be more reserved about drinking, but you can still have fun! Unless, you have guests that NEED alcohol to have fun!!!
I think you will get some people that tend to leave your reception early if it's a Sunday wedding. Regardless, you'll have people that will leave early even if it's a Saturday wedding.
You'll get 50/50 with opinions but do what you are more comfortable with. Afterall, no matter what you do, there will some guests that will complain!!

Good luck!!

we had a saturday wedding and it is what I prefer, however if I was invited to a sunday wedding, I would go, but IF I had work the next day I would have to leave early. I think a friday night is better

If you were looking to choose between a Friday and Sunday I personally would much rather attend a Friday night wedding. It's kinda like a night out and you have all weekend to recover! my best-friend had hers on a suday and a lot of people left early. I didn't of course but was so hung over at work the next day i was cursing her....just kidding...that was my own fault

a friday evening wedding is just as affordable as a sunday day/aft wedding. we had ours fri., ch was at 7 and reception started at 8. it went until 12 and people left early. people will always leave weddings early, regardless.

i am not a fan of sunday weddings, jmho.

I personally would prefer a Friday night wedding over a Sunday. Unfortunately, if you are jewish that won't be an option. I know it wasn't an option for us so we splurged for the Saturday night.

We had a Sunday night wedding and it was great...it was a summer wedding so I think many people may have been able to take the next day off

Re: how do you feel about sunday weddings?

I originally wanted a Sunday afternoon wedding to save money for our families but since we werent having the outdoor summer wedding that DH REALLY wanted, we compromised and had it on a Saturday night. Since our wedding was in the winter, it had only been a $5/per person differential between a Sunday afternoon and a Saturday night. Had the wedding been 3 or 4 months later, it would have put everything into a completely different price range.

Personally, I like to be in my home by 9pm the latest on a Sunday night if I have to be at work the next day. I need my time to unwind and mentally prepare myself for the next day. If I have Monday off, then Sunday night is as good as a Saturday night in my book.
