how do you feel about sunday weddings?

Original post by Kara and Todd

I am curious to know how people feel about Sunday weddings.

I know a Saturday night is ideal, but it's starting to bother me that I'd have to pay a premium for essentially the same service.

If we had it on a Sunday, we'd start a bit earlier and maybe do a 5pm CH and end the party at 10, so people can still get home at a reasonable hour. (Current plan was 6-11 or 6:30-11:30 for Sat night) It would be easier to book our church, too, as the demand is lower. We'd also be able to start the ceremony at almost any time we want because we wouldn't have to be working around the Saturday 5pm mass... (Latest we could have the ceremony would be like 3 or 3:30 which leaves 3 hours before the CH starts...)

We'd also easily be able to afford our dream place, instead of paying more than we really want to... It's still in our budget to afford this place on a Sat night, but we're REALLY trying not to go broke over this wedding. We want to buy a home and still have a life and be able to go out, etc. between now and the wedding...

As far as OOT guests, the way I see it is that they take the same amount of time off of work (Instead of having to take Friday off, they'd have to take Monday)... Most of our parents friends (and our parents) are or will be retired by then.

Anyway, this was the latest suggestion, so I'd like to get an honest gage from people. I've never been to a Sunday wedding, so I'm curious to hear from those who have. Did people *really* not have as much fun b/c of work the next day?

Any thoughts would be appreciated - and please be honest. I won't be offended if you think it's a bad idea. I really want to weigh the pros and cons!

TIA!

Just remember, the people who mean a lot to you will come whichever day of the weekend you choose. You have to do what's best for you!

I have never been to a Sunday wedding.....it wouldn't bother me, but FH, on the other hand, complains about ANYTHING that's on a Sunday- he says its his day of rest!! (really its his day of sports!!- football in fall/winter and playing softball in spring/summer!! So I know if we went to a Sunday wedding he would not be happy!!! that's just us though!! HTH.

Well, if it comes down to it, just ask him what would upset him more -- going to a Sunday wedding or you going with another date! JK!

What time would it start on a Friday? I personally prefer Friday to Sunday (better excuse to take a day off!), but I've found that a lot of people wind up missing the ceremony for a Friday wedding.

The wedding I was in on Friday had very few people at the church, (maybe 50 or so), but about 200 at the reception.

Having a Saturday night wedding was a MUST for us. We figured it would be worth the extra $$$ for the added convenience for us and our guests.

If I had to choose between a Friday and a Sunday wedding I would go with a Friday. At least it gets the weekend off to a good start, rather than starting the work week with a hang-over.

Sunday is a good day for a wedding since most people are off, but just don't end it too late or many people will probably leave early.
Also it's true it's usually a little more subdued atmosphere on a Sunday wedding than on a Fri or Sat. But that's not necessarily a bad thing, it just depends on the type of mood you want for your wedding.

good point Kara!! what's funny is the wedding I went to this past weekend (it was on Saturday afternoon) he didn't want to come, so I brought my friend as a date instead!! He actually had a good excuse- he's finishing our kitchen! I had a better time w/ my friend, so it all worked out! It doesn't even have to be a Sunday wedding for him to complain about it!! He's such a hermit!

Are you dragging him out to go to Douglaston Manor on Friday???

I hope you can make it - would love to say hi in person. My FI and I will be there for a tasting!

if you had it until 11 on a sunday night, people may leave early. mine was til 9 and no one left early. personally, i'd prefer a sunday to a friday but again, everyone is different. if you have a partying kind of crowd though, you may want to go with the friday.

im not a fan of the sunday afternoon and even less of the sunday night wedding - if its on a holiday weekend and everyone has teh monday off, then it is not so bad

I don't mind weddings on a Sunday... Actually I prefer them to a Friday night wedding. Just b/c I always feel so rushed going to a friday wedding, leaving work early (I never got out when IU had planned to) then batteling traffic not to be late... Yet we always got there in time w/ enoguh time for a glass or 2 of pre-ceremony champagne...

Re: how do you feel about sunday weddings?

Assuming you decide against the saturday night wedding, I personally prefer a Sunday evening wedding (which is what we chose) to a Friday evening wedding for the following reasons:

1. I don't have to rush home/leave early from work to get to the church or RH (assuming it is not a close friend)

2. If the wedding is a good friend's, I would rather take the following Monday off from work to recover from partying than take the Friday off to prep for the party that evening

3. I think more guests would be able to attend the church/ceremony on a Sunday than on a Friday since most people work (some of our guests are blue collar workers and have to work saturdays as well)

Like the other posters above said...the people who truly want to be at your wedding and enjoy won't be sticklers about the day you choose. They will come and have a great time. If the sticklers start complaining once they realize what day your event is, they should stay home because why would you want people like that to participate on your special day.

Remember people always complain and unfortunately no matter how hard you try you can't make everyone happy....I am coming to slowly realize that myself.

Hope that helped!

Re: how do you feel about sunday weddings?

We're having a sunday wedding and I'm not worried at all. First let me remind you that people are either going to come or not--the day has little to do with it. If they really want to be there for your wedding, they will take the next day off if they have to.
We didnt choose a friday because people work on fridays and they would have to leave work early, rush to get dressed, sit in Friday traffic (which is horrible on LI), etc. We felt that friday was more inconvinient for our guests than sunday. Saturday was waaay too expensive and not worth the money.
Pick whichever day YOU want, because in the end...you cant make everyone happy and someone is going to complain no matter what day you decide to have it on.

Re: how do you feel about sunday weddings?

Obviously, most people's ideal scenario would be a Saturday evening wedding but it's just SO much more money than the other dates. At my hall it's not just 20 bucks a head more-- it's more like $40-$50 dollars more per head for a Saturday night so we just couldn't afford it. I didn't want to scrimp on my other vendors just to have a certain night. I loved when we met with our priest and he looked at me like I was crazy when I told him our date and said 'Why don't you just get married on a Saturday night?' And I thought to myself 'because, azz, it's expensive!!!' LOL! I couldn't believe that- talk about oblivious.

Then there was Friday night- again, I would love to have gotten married on a Friday night but that was too much money also- Anywhere from $25- 35 more per head at my Hall (they really get you where they know they can!). So I was like well, forget that-- Plus, my Mom and FMIL said that they didn't want to have it on a Friday night- They said that they feel everyone needs to rush from work to make the wedding, a lot of people need to leave early and there's always traffic. They also said that they felt tons of people don't show to the church (or ceremony) part b/c of that-- so you walk into an 'empty church'... Now I don't know much about that myself but that's how they felt... I told them don't even bother discussing it anyways b/c we can't afford it lol...

Then there was Thursday night-- the cheapest. My mouth started watering when they told me the rates for this night! Phew! I wanted that BAD!! But my Mom and FMIL gave me a look like 'yeah, right!!!' So that was the end of that. An afternoon wedding was out of the question for me- I'm NOT a morning person at all.

I know some people may not like the Sunday evening but there's nothing I can do- if it means that much to them they can make out a blank check for me and Vinny-- that way, we can afford whatever night they would prefer! It's just one night and how many weddings do you really go to? I think they can suuck it up... If not, then they can just respond 'no' with regrets... it's OK.

Aside from Saturday evening, there are positives and negatives for each night that people have to choose from. Well, actually, I guess you could say the one negative for a Saturday night would be the cost... But, it all depends on what you want to do. If people care about you enough and are good family members and friends then they will come for you no matter what it takes! If they are jerks then they will have something to say NO MATTER what you do! You could have your wedding at Versailles and pay for everyone's travel expenses and SOMEONE will have something negative to say--

That's why I don't make myself crazy anymore about it

Hope the different ways to look at it helps you a bit though!!

We are doing a Sunday-but it is the Sunday before Columbus day so most of our guests have off-otherwise we wouldn't have picked a Sunday. My brother is getting married on 07/03/07. This is a Tuesday-but it is the night before the 4th of July and most people have off on the 4th-so they got an AMAZING deal for having it on a Tuesday-just a thought since I saw your date was in July.

I'd prefer a Friday wedding to a Sunday wedding.

It also depends on how far your guests have to travel. If everyone is local, I don't think it matters.

I live in Manhattan. If I attended a wedding in LI, CT, or NJ, I'd have to travel back home and be tired for work the next day. However, if the wedding was in Manhattan, I wouldn't mind Sunday at all.

i am having a sunday wedding and i know how dizzying it could be- 'will my guests leave early? will they come at all? will they be angry?'
but you know what, you have to do whats best for you. your guests are going to come no matter what.
if it saves some money in your wallet, then by all means do a sunday wedding. why go broke for a sat. wedding?

and personally, i think i rather a sunday wedding over a friday wedding. one way or another people have to take off the day whether its a friday or a monday. plus there is a lot of traffic on a friday night-esp. in the summer.
some poeple suck it up for work the next day if the wedding falls on a sunday.
in a perfect world, i'd have a sat. wedding if i could afford it but, not these days!
by all means have a sunday wedding.

As a guest... I prefer Saturday nights or even Saturday afternoon (which is also less expensive). Only becuase it gives me a day to rest before the work week.

But for a very important person I would ABSOLUTELY make it a priority to be off on Monday so I could fully enjoy the wedding without the stress of knowing it is my last day off...

Re: how do you feel about sunday weddings?

Yup, and Friday or Sat night is still in the running, too... just looking at our options re: Sunday, too, b/c of the cost of Sat night.

Saturday afternoon isn't an option - we don't want the wedding to be that early + we want the RD the night before b/c of our OOT BP members.

ETA - everyone's different perspectives are very helpful!
