Some people also ask how much we will pay per plate...WHY??? so you know how much to put in the envelope??? I can't believe some people have the audacity to ask these questions. Absolutely no common sense.

I tell them, it's big enough and about what I paid for the hall...I tell them to guess.

i would tell them it's expected in a way you know. like when i got engaged and if i was telling someone over the phone they asked' what does it look like? ' how many big is it?'
in a way i guess it can be rude maybe depending on who ask or how it is asked!

I honestly don't care. One day at work we were at a workshop and this girl I work with who is divorced was talking about her ring (obviously she didn;t have it on) going on and on about what she should do with it..so I asked her how many carats it was just because I wanted a point of reference I guess and she gave me an attitude.
I would never look at someones ring and say oooh how many carats but she was talking about it and I just innocently asked...oh well

Certain people in your life will eventually learn the carat size. This question tends to fall in same category of asking someone 'How much do you weigh?' 'How much money do you make?' I guess some people feel more comfortable answering these questions than others.

Personally, if I were to be asked that questionin regard to a ring, which I have not yet, I would say 'Its just what I wanted.' Most civilized people should be clued into knowing that translates into 'none of your business'
As far as price per person goes, it is actually quite easy to find out on one's own. They can look at locations magazines or various websites for a ball park figure of that you are paying. It is gauche to ask someone face to face how much they pay just for the sake of knowing.
However, I have privately asked a few of the brides here what they've paid per plate at various locations that I am considering for my function. I have a legitimate reason for asking and really wanted to know the differences in costs by season and/or day of the week. In that respect, everyone was very helpful and I continue to be thankful.
This board provides the perfect and appropriate venue for such discussion. A family BBQ with a nosy competitive cousin does not!

Well thats different, you ask because you are doing research, not because someone wants to know for their own personal business, whatever that may be.
I just keep finding myself getting annoyed at this post (and not with you girls!!) because I just can't believe that people ask these questions. I know I do not have a very big ring, but I don't care. Its perfect for me, and what my FH could afford. Someone said before that they got the comment about their ring being 'cute', and I think I got the same comment. I remember thinking 'what are you trying to say?' Say congratulations and keep your comments to yourself. I am sorry girls I don't know why I am being so defensive to this question, but I am finding myself very angred by it. I have heard people say that if a diamond is not over a certain size, than whats the point. The point is I AM ENGAGED and I HAVE A MAN WHO LOVES ME AND WANTS TO MARRY ME!!!!!!!!!!

Uh ohh girls!! i have to admit that before i got engaged i asked all my engaged girlfriends what their ring carat size was! i really did not think that it was a rude question... their rings were so huge i was just amazed. i was new to the whole engagement ring thing and i really was just trying to get an idea of what the sizes were... i mean in the beginning i did not even know the names of the shapes, so i would ask that too! in retrospect, i do realize that it is a very materialistic question to ask, but since i did myself i really dont mind when other people ask me, and believe me EVERYONE has asked (except for my parents and his parents). I think that it is more in the tone of voice when the person asks that is offending. one of my girlfriends asks in a very sad tone of voice, and i immediately feel guilty. She has even gone ring shopping since then to see how much she can get the same carat size ring for! I had some girls even ask me how much my fiance paid for it... this question is a little more shocking to me. I have a pear shaped diamond(which i luv) and i have had many people tell me that they always though a pear was very ugly, but mine is ok... jeez that usually makes me feel bad!
I realize now that i probably have to call a few of my friends and apologize for asking them the carat questions. one of my friends has a 3+ carat ring, and i used to always grab her hand to look at it. ooops!

I think it really depends on who is asking and the circumstances. My friends and on here is one thing - (we all share info). But when it comes to people I don't know well I find it rude and obnoxious.

In my humble opinion, I think it's just nicer to ask:
What do you love about your ring? What makes it special. Not everyone has 3 or 2 carats...so I think that's more of question people feel comfy and happy answering! Just me.
Mine is pretty and sparkly and he picked it out ready to ask me to spend his life with him!

i do the same, i tell people i dont know or care to know it's specs.. i just love it!
which i really dont know all that much, FH picked it out and it's from him and that is all that matters!
