How important is it to have a woman President?

How important is it to have a woman President?

Carol Moseley Braun is running for the democratic nomination...she is way behind in the polls...but doesn't have to be.

I respect those of you who do not agree with her stand on certain issues, but what a statement the women of the US make by standing together and voting for her!!!

edited to say...vote extremely even if you aren't republican...just wanted to express the strong feeling

I would TOTALLY cross party lines if I thought ANY candidate was the best for the office. I think this country is ready for a 'minorioty' President but I think that we will see a Afican American or Latino man in office before a woman.

Its sad because there are MANY other countries that have woman as their high ranking official and we say that the USA is a super power?? Hmmmmm...wait until a woman gets into office and 'cleans' up!!

I will read about the canidate that you posted about and if I feel that she is the best...and I agree with her issues, then I will strongly consider voting for her.

I wish President Palmer (from 24) was the real President

I would love to see a woman in office, but of course it depends on who is best candidate (or the lesser of two evils, I should say...)

This is how I feel as well...unfortunately.

I would vote for a woman only if I agree with her on the major issues. In this case, I feel she is tooo left, if that makes any sense.

But also, in all honesty, I don't think our country is ready yet for a woman president.

Other countries in our world have female presidents. I can't even remember them all. We are very behind in this even though we say we are so 'equal' in rights.

I'd vote for a female president if I agreed with her platform (and she as republican).

Im a die hard republican but would never vote for someone I was against.

Female VP & Presidental hopefuls are handicapped by people who feel their vote won't count if they vote female.

If people really voted their minds, prehaps we'd see different total numbers. I think it is moving in that direction.

Still.... Male, Female, Black, White, Jew or Catholic, you should vote for you feel is best suited for the position (or as always the lesser of two evils). Voting against the truest form of self expression.

I love walking around snickering at ditzy Senator Clinton and her press tactics to say oen thing and have it interpreted another way. She's a player and a politican through and through and God help me I can't STAND that woman!! I can say it and say it proud, don't blame me I did NOT vote for her!

Yes, Sen.Clinton is most definitely the best of the worst examples of women in power! This woman DOES NOT get my respect. Well being of the state is not on the top of her list, nor is getting to the top by respectful and honest means!

Also, I don't think that all the stress should be put on the gender of the candidate. Main concern should about their goals and their integrity, not their sex!!
I really don't see how the fact that someone is a woman could make a big difference to the well being of the country!

I voted 'Only if she is the best candidate'

I am for anyone who wants to try and make this country a better place. However, I wouldn't vote for a woman simply because of her gender.

I am editing this because I was too general...I think we need to mature as a country before a woman is made president. We ned to be a country that doesn't consider gender before choosing a leader.

It is unfortunate but I think a woman president would not be as effective only because a lot of the other countires that a president has to deal with treats women as inferiors and I don''t think they would be willing to even consider our foreign policies if they came froma women.

Personally, I would have no problem at all voting for a woman for president if I felt that she was the best candidate.

did you know that Iran had a female Vice President?
yes she had to cover her face, but she was there...

I think its a lame excuse, the UK had no problems with Margaret Thatcher

As much as Clinton gets bad press, and we all know she has a national agenda, the more women involved in our government, helps all of us (although I did not vote for her either - one of the few women candidates I have not voted for)

Re: How important is it to have a woman President?

I think the fact that we are having this debate is proof that we are not read for a woman president. this is not about feminism! this is about who is capable of running the country! the reason England was able to have thatcher as a head of the state is because woman could inherit the throne of England for centuries prior to that. So, the english, being used to seeing a woman as head of the their country weren''t too concentrated on her gender, just her leadership abilities! We here, however, are way too concerned with so called 'gender equalities' to really see things clearly! we are just not used to seeing a woman in charge, so when she is, we get Waaaay too exhited to see just exactly what she is doing! Also, A LOT of people would vote for a woman just because she is a woman, while missing what she can bring to the table! It''s said and it deminishes the social progress of this country! JMO

How else can you break the glass ceiling?

I''m sorry...I have a major problem with these statistics...

I vote for female candidates any chance I can get (with some exceptions) to break this barrier...how else can this be changed?

Re: How important is it to have a woman President?

Why does it need to be changed? It''s NOT about what''s betweeb the legs of the candidate, it about what''s beweet his/hers ears!

'So called' gender equalities. hehehe - that was funny.

I agree with you Erika...but like I said before, I would only vote if I agreed with her politics (democratic).

wow...I''m really shocked... are you saying that out of all the women in this nation there are less than 50 that have enough brains to rule our naion?

one of our houses is named 'House of REPRESENTATIVES' IMHO our Congress does not represent the American people...

Re: How important is it to have a woman President?

I don''t think voting for a woman just because she is a woman and to equalize the % of women representation in the governing body is a fair way to do things.

Because all in all, the % of women who may be interested in politics might be less (hence capping the % of women eligible to work in congress). So it may be incorrect to look at % of total population.

Similar stats can be shown for banks and other financial institutions (and MBA programs for that matter), but the fact remains that even in my undergrad courses in college for econ, the % of women in the class was not 50%!!! And many careers are difficult to balance with kids, so often women may get their graduate degree and not use them to the full extent.

I think less than 50% of both men and women have enough in between their ears to rule this country.

but IMHO if young girls see women in these types of positions...they may be inspired...

what other ways can the glass ceiling be broken?

ETS: look at Dan Quayle and GWB...they were not great students...but still got elected...

Re: How important is it to have a woman President?

I am not sure all women want to a)have challenging careers and b)care a whole lot about having a career, period.

Even within the LIW crowd, we have many newlyweds who are considering either working PT or staying home when the babies are born... So to some degree, I think its entirely possible that not all women want to have a career (or even more so a 'challenging' career), and some are happy with just being a wife or having a 'stereotypical' female career (teacher, nurse, daycare professional, etc).

After all, men and women are not exactly the same.

On a funny note, while my parents raised all their kids with the 'career' focus; my mom, a baby boomer, now wishes that she was a SAHW... According to her 'Women shouldn''t work too hard'. I guess this changes with age.

Re: How important is it to have a woman President?

so based on that...don''t you think the women who really run are passionate about it...rather than the ones who get to office b/c daddy wanted him too...with only baseball partial owner experience?

so do you ladies believe the glass ceiling is OK? maybe if there was none then women could focus on their careers and men could stay at home...a lot
