I live about 7 miles away from my job- still takes a good 20 min with traffic in the morning though
but from work to go to school is another 10 miles....and from school to home it is about 27 miles (KILLER on gas) and I go 3 days a week
and that can take me anywhere from 15 minutes (if I leave from work) or 30 minutes (if I leave from home) and well if traffic a good hour

i ask bc we are looking at a house but its a far commute for my FH to go to work - he would have to drive to work everyday and it would probably take him about an hour - there could be the possibility of him working from home once a week which would be awesome but it would be a big expense with the gas/mileage on the car...this is in florida though not NY....we could move closer to his job but then we'd be further from my family - he rather us be close to them and so would i - i just dont know how its going to affect him.....it takes him an hour or longer now but thats on the bus....
You have to take in account the salary and gas expense. Say you make $500 a week, but with an hour commute you have to fill up twice a week, that would probably cost you between 80-100 a week. So now your weekly salary is only 400. With whats left, can you live and pay all your bills? You could always negotiate the salary because of the commute.
FH works in brooklyn and takes the train 2x per week which is paid through his job, but the other 3 he has to drive in. His salary allows for him to have the longer commute, but it isn't fun. he comes home so tired just from driving for so long.
Also take into account, I don't think FL has as much traffic as NY does, so the commute may not be as bad as it would be here...

its really far - its 70 miles but no traffic (unless there is a bad accident or something) - but the salary would be what he is making here - and if its only 4 days a week traveling i don't think it would be AS bad....but if its 5 days a week it could rough on him - he isn't concerned about it, especially because he'll be bringing his salary down with him - but i feel like 1 hour is so long!! my dad commuted from SI to Queen and it took him over an hour everyday and my FH's dad commutes from SI to LI everyday and it takes him over an hour as well - but thats because of traffic - not because of the miles....

Re: How long do you.....
I am trying to figure this out right now for myself I have a 15 minute drive into work but I want to apply for a job that would be a 1.5 hour commute by subway - it is such a tough decision! I wish i could try it out for a month and then decide which i like better

If he is bringing his NY salary down to FL, hes golden! And the 4 days a week of driving wont be as bad as 5, your right. Get him some good CD's or download some good music to his Ipod so he has something good to listen to on his drive!! An hour is long, but some people like the drive, it helps them relax from a long days work.

Re: How long do you.....
It takes me about 12-15 minutes to drive to the office. However, when I have to go to my clients in the city, it takes me an hour minimum to get there.

I am about 25 minutes away from work... my FH works in the city, so he is about 1 hour commute...
For me, once I am in the car or in a train, it doesnt matter if it is 30 minute or an hour... anything over an hour in a half would probably bother me
