I am having a HUGE problem with my pay that is from over 6 months ago and now I can't find those old paystubs. Just curious what the appropriate time to keep them is?

i keep them in a file on my desk.. i pretty much just keep them until i remember to throw them out. i have random ones from 1998 and then i'm missing ones from this year. i'm not very organized.

I would keep 6 months worth. I also did not keep them and when you apply for a mortgage you need pay stubs, bank statements, w2's etc. So keep everything important in a file. You never know when you are going to need it.

I was told to always keep the last paycheck stub of the year since it has the final totals of everything accumulated from the entire year.

I have every paystub from my first day of work, 9 years ago. I don't know where the first 2 years are, but I do have them somewhere.

this was me until this year, I have started letting go of the older years one by one.
Since I have known DH I make him save his, and he has definitely had problems with payroll it was handy to have them as proof.

I keep all my paper work for 7 years...and Danielle neveer kept anything until we got married....Now I handle all the paper work. Scott

I just read an article on this in good Housekeeping:
To summarize:
tax- returns - 7 years credit card statemnets- 1 year, unless it has tax-deductible items, then 7 years
ATM & Credit card receipts--until you've received stamet/bablanced checkbook- 7 years if tax-dedeuctible
bank statments- 7 yaers
w-2s --7 years mortgage & home improvement bills- as long as you own your home
utilty & phone- 1 year, unless it is for a home office, 7 years
Shred anything with account # or SS #.
I thought it mentioned pay stubs, but based on the above, I think jsut till you get your w-2 is good.

I am so bad! I hate Clutter!!! I throw everything away! My DH always yells at me. He keeps everything on the desk in the computer room and it looks like a big mess! When I pay a bill I throw the rest of the paper with the bill on it away! I throw away my Pay Stubs as soon as I get it!
