FH and I are going to the Bahamas in 6 weeks, and we thought that even though we could get away with just using our birth certificate, we may as well get the passport 'just in case' and well, it can't hurt to have one anyway.
But our trip is in exactly 6 weeks, and they say it takes 6 weeks to get (we didn't have it expedited)...
Anyone get a passport recently or know how long it REALLY takes?

FMIL and FFIL applied together, in the same envelope ----
FFIL rec'd his in 5 weeks,
FMIL's came a week and a half later.

3-4 weeks...(we applied in jan i think) if you are worried that you wont get it, you can A. pay them to do faster shipment or B. go to the city and walk out with a passport the same day...
you dont need a passport now (next year you will) but it makes things easier
edit just bring photo id and birth certificate..and maybe one other form

mine came really quick, I'd say about 2-3 weeks, they had told me it would take about 6 weeks, but it didn't

i got mine in less than two weeks. i applied for it only three weeks before my departure date. no rush or anything. the guy at the post office told me two weeks!

I just did mine today. They told me I'll have it may 23rd. The Town Of Hempstead had a RV parked at the North Merrick Library today. They did everything there( They even took the pictures for your passport). I know you can go to the Town Of Hempstead Town Hall, and get them done there too. I will be bringing Bri there when she has off so she can get hers. Just to let you know for an extra fee you can get it expedited quicker.

wow, that's quick. I hope mine comes in time. it does ask on the application when the trip is, so I put may 21st. So do you think they take that into account when they are processing them, so that we get it in time?

the guy who processed my paperwork at the post office wrote my departure date on the passport form and said they (the passport processors) would take it into consideration. he told me he was 99% sure that i would recieve it within two weeks. seriously i had it 10 days later. i don't know if i just lucked out or what it was, but i got it VERY quickly. i was sweating the WHOLE time waiting for it!! also, i went to the post office with a bunch of the forms to have the process expedited but the post office worker told me not to bother.

ETA: i went to the post office in early november for a trip that left on thanksgiving day.

I had to travel last minute to Europe for work and had it within two days. We paid for expedited processing - but it eliminated any stress.

Oh, that is SUCH good news to hear. I was wondering if that's why they asked for your trip date.... I'm hopeful . . .. My trip is May 21st.

FYI - you can pay to expedite it. that is what I just did for a trip I am taking in 2.5 weeks.

I got mine the same day. But I had to show my tickets that I was leaving for London the next day. I went to the Stamford, CT office and they can do it right then. It was so easy!
