My boyfriend and I are planning to get engaged. What I thought would be this summer, has recently turned into soon (My future mother-in-law let it slip that he bought a ring! Eeee!). We have talked about it, and decided we won't get married until October 2016 (three years away). He is going back to school with a career change and won't graduate until December 2015. We figured this would give us about 9 months to get our acts together with his new career. Is it too soon to be getting engaged if our wedding isn't for three years? Should this even bother me? We love each other and that's what should matter, right?
P.S. we've been together since 7th grade--ELEVEN YEARS!!

How long is too long to be engaged? - Long Island Weddings
everyone is different! personally I told FH that if it was going to take us too long (for me, about 3 years) that I would rather do something super simple and small and start our lives together. but I also would have eloped! lol I know most girls prefer a standard wedding

Re: How long is too long to be engaged?
My only suggestion to those engaged over 2 years is not to start the planning right away. It will feel like FOREVER and consume you over the next 3 years if you do. I was engaged in June 2011 and didn't start looking for a venue until December of 2011/January 2012. I was originally looking for late 2012 but ended up with April 2013. It was just enough time, could have been less for me! So I was engaged just under 2 years if I had done all my planning and then had another year to wait I personally would have gone a little nuts... plus you then start to rethink things. So my advice is to get engaged, but not start all the planning right away, especially the fine details!

Thanks for the advice! He actually proposed November 1st! Even earlier than I expected and completely caught me off guard (pics of the engagement in my album--he's the CUTEST!) Now we are just enjoying being engaged. We're going to start looking at venues and photogs this summer since that's what's most important to us and then take our time with the rest. Right now, I'm just enjoying this time with my FIANCE! (i just love saying it!)

Re: How long is too long to be engaged?
So excited for you! 3 years engaged is 'longer than average' but definitely not too long to be engaged! If it's what you want, then go for it. Like you said all that matters is that you are in love and I think that its great that you found the person you want to spend your life with. If it makes you feel better my fiance and I will have been engaged for almost 4 years when we get married in 2015 (and together for 8). He knew that if he proposed when he did that it would be a longer engagement (I also changed careers, applied to graduate school- almost done!). It's exciting and time flies by anyways. Plus you can take your time planning!
