FH and I have been looking since Labor Day. It's so frustrating! We have a big downpayment, perfect credit scores, nothing to sell and we can't find anything we like or agree on.
We made offers on 3 houses that were all rejected. Those houses are STILL on the market though - I think a lot of sellers have unrealistic ideas about what their homes are worth.
One house we've been scoping out since September has been on the market for 2 years and they won't lower the price!!!!
UGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!
Or they're just seeing if they can get what they want. The house we are getting was def holding out...but now they're to the point where they have to sell bc they need to move over the summer...
I loved loved loved this house online but unfortunately couldn't get to see it and love the one we got...but for any of you girls looking in Nassau, might be worth a look!
Another bad thing... on a decently priced house (meaning you shouldnt have to FIX anything) I'd automatically gut that kitchen. I hate it. I'm too picky for this. Especially when it comes to kitchens. I'm always watching HGTV shows with fh getting disgusted at the kitchens when they're finished with the renovations.
What do you hate about that kitchen? I love it!
Diff strokes for diff folks I guess...you must hate mine...
Meanwhile since you're an HG'er...my new kitchen has a subzero fridge that they CABINETED to match the kitchen. I hate the cabineted fridge look and am wondering, is the face of the fridge destroyed from the adhesive they use to make the cabinets go on?
We were thinking of getting an apartment or house in September after all of the buzz from the wedding has finally died down but it feels like I could never afford all that goes into a house! It is so depresing! I don't know how people do it!

Re: How many of us are house hunting right now?
FH and I have been looking at houses since this past summer. We're looking in VA though where is currently lives (in an apt) and I will relocate to. We've looked at quite a few with a realtor and drove past a few on our own. Some odd ball houses out there! In this one house, the people put such a huge bathtub in the bathroom that the door couldn't be opened all the way. Another house we thought was decent and we were thinking of putting in an offer but now it's already in contract. FH and I did recently get pre-approved for a mortgage though. Oh, and it seems like every nice house I like, it's crossed off the list because of the schools. I am trying to be patient but it's very frustrating!

First off, that fridge is not so bad and I think your kitchen is TDF (To die for!) and I'll explain the differences between your kitchen and the other one in my obnoxiousness.....
In the Bellmore house that is not a real island... don't attach spindles to a banister to a piece of plywood, cover it with granite and call it an island and expect me to be fooled. I hate hate hate the cabinets. I can't stand when people don't put hardware on their cabinets... it'll cost you what? Like an extra $200 and make the kitchen look so much more finished. Also, matching backsplash to the countertop, I don't think so.
Your kitchen - quality cabinets, real island, sub zero - even covered - I'd and also nd it daily. Loves it. Love the backsplash, it compliments the countertop, not matchy matches it.
I said yesteday I loved how you used the space in your apartment kitchen - the corner two basin sink? Too clever. A girl after my own heart!

I wish we were house hunting. But we can't afford that and the wedding. I want a house so badly! That will be the first thing on my mind right after the wedding.

i have been house hunting for a freaking year, we almost got 2 but one when we checked the taxes with the town they were insane and the other we fell out of contract, it was a short sale long story. The only good part is that we been able to save so much money to put down and be able to fix up the house. I cant wait till the day I dont have to go on MLSLI LOL

Re: How many of us are house hunting right now?
There were some houses we saw that it is obvious older people live there and their prices are ridiculous, especially since they fixed major things with duct tape and string!! I understand you raised your family in that house which is why you probably think its worth more than it really is, but its now time for FH and I to raise a family and we cant do it on the streets!!
We are going on some more open houses with our real estate agent today!! Wish us luck!!
Where are all you girls looking??

Re: How many of us are house hunting right now?
FH and I closed in Oct. We searched for over a year. I would go with the real estate lady now and then and if I liked a house I would bring FH. Then if we were free on Sundays we did open houses. We didn't let the search consume us but we did spend a lot of time doing it.
If you take your time and try not to rush you will find something. You just have to wait for the right deal to come along. Look for estate sales and foreclosures, though foreclosures have a lot of issues, especially when you go to close. Its a good time to buy though, the mortgage rates are really low.
We got a great deal on a house South of Montauk in East Islip. Never ever dreamt we could afford to live there, especially in a 4 bedroom house. But the house dropped $100,000 in price one night and we were there seeing it the next day and made an offer that night. You have to really watch. The house got three asking price offers that weekend, had I not seen it, it would have been gone.

I LOVE the countertops and cabinets (even though when i first went to look at the house, I thought MAN these people like cabinets, hahah).
The thing I hate about the kitchen is that weird island...I've been having thoughts about what to do there when we move in because I don't like that thing...lol Thoughts?
And thanks about my current kitchen!!!!

I like the one in the middle with the metal legs because I think there would be too much space to go to your other island if it weren't there. I remember hearing about how your kitchen should be like a triangle with your countertop, stove and fridge. You'd be walking far distances to prep your food on that big island. I like it there.

This totally happened to us. We found a colonial we LOVED in 'Garden City'--guess what? IT WAS HEMPSTEAD!
Anyway, I'm done hunting! I have a tentative closing date of 7/15/09!
Haha same here! And the taxes were probably 20000 a year! There was one in Hempstead near GC that we saw in the paper and actually discussed maybe taking the risk for the price and counting onCatholic school, then we saw the taxes would be more then our mortgage!

Ant really wants to start looking but, with Taylor I really would like to wait a year or 2 but, he is right about the market now. Its stressing me out cause I want a good school district and with low taxes and it is hard.

Re: How many of us are house hunting right now?
FH and i are in a real pickle about this. we want to move to FL so i've been looking online at house rentals and apt rentals there. we want to have something to go to after the HM. we were trying to figure out if we want to go down there just before the wedding to check out places, or maybe use the HM to check out places. I'm seeing so many great places now, but no one is going to hold anything for us for 5 months so we have to wait. It's very frustrating!

we are!!!! Its ridiculous even our other homes the taxes are crazy. We looked at a house in Garden City the taxes were 24000.00 a year. And we thought 9/10 g were bad! lol We are going to afew open houses this weekend. So getting the house of my dreams, NO MATTER WHAT! lol lol
See I think 9 -10 is horrendous but I think that's because I live in Queens where taxes are insanely low.... we live in a house that is ridiculously big compared to LI standards and our taxes are 3,000! And we're in the best school district in Queens!
I guess it all depends on the area in LI. I grew up in a huge house. 7 bedrooms on the water etc. I know they are hard to find but some LI houses are big. But if its in an area thats nice it will be alot in taxes. Sad but true. Also the property (yards etc) thats what you end up paying for. Even if its a 2x4 lol lol Totally stinks. What areas are you thinking of on LI??? I know Island Park (but stay in Harbour Isle or Barnum Island(which is better)) that area is cheaper in taxes. Like 6/7g. If you like being close to the beach (Long Beach) Those are nicer areas with some nice homes for less taxes. Good Luck!!! FOR ALL OF US!
