How discouraging is it to see that you can afford the house but not the taxes? OR when you see a gorgeous house and a really c rappy school district!![]()

This is very frustrating!
This totally happened to us. We found a colonial we LOVED in 'Garden City'--guess what? IT WAS HEMPSTEAD!
Anyway, I'm done hunting! I have a tentative closing date of 7/15/09!![]()

Haha same here! And the taxes were probably 20000 a year! There was one in Hempstead near GC that we saw in the paper and actually discussed maybe taking the risk for the price and counting onCatholic school, then we saw the taxes would be more then our mortgage!
Yep, 18500!!!!!!!!
Totally understand. The house we saw in GC was 24g a year! a mortgage on a mortgage. I cant imagine buying a first home. DH & I own 2 already & this has been the hardest to actually find one we want!

Re: How many of us are house hunting right now?
Hope this link works! BELLMORE HOUSE
I know a few people who looked at this house. It has a lot of downfalls for the money. You have to take your garbarge down a private road for pick up, mail has to also be picked up down the road, there is no garage, no either basement I believe, Asthetically it looks good but has some major issues for that price.

Some great towns to consider:
Albertson (My friends bought here and LOVE it)
Williston Park (Cousin bought here and LOVES it)
Levittown (Taxes are high but a lot of the houses are completely done up and generally have a lot of property. Downfall- most L-Town houses have no basements)
That's all I can think of.
Honestly, if you can buy now- DO IT. Mortgage rates are excellent.

I wish we could be house hunting...i'd loooove to take advantage of the low interest rates right now...they are gonna go up soon, and even 1/4% is thousands of dollars saved! Arrg.... but we own, not one but TWO apartments...one is a 1BR and one is a 2BR... i just hope to be in contact on one of them by the wedding...having to mortgage payments *****!

Well perhaps I can give some of you hope that you can find the house 'Before' the Wedding. The FH and I closed on our house yesterday in Ozone Park, Queens - Its a 1 Fam - 3BR but does need work - we will start some of the work now but most after the wedding (July 11 - 2009) - we will be living in construction but its great my parents are a few blocks away - its helos for dinner and when the grandkids arrive...LOLThis was well thought out

I wish we were house hunting. But we can't afford that and the wedding. I want a house so badly! That will be the first thing on my mind right after the wedding.
I agree, I cant imagine doing both at the same time!

Re: How many of us are house hunting right now?
we've been house hunting for over a yeari'm going to freak out if we dont have a house soon!!!!
its so hard to find a decently prices house that you dont have to rip down, that isn't on a main rd, that has a good school district, and that you can grow into and not have to move as soon as you have one child
and when this type of house goes on the market, its gone in like a month
good luck to you girls out there!!

OMG I feel your pain! We are officially in contract as of today and praying that we close before the wedding on 7/3!!!! The seller is just as eager to get out as we are to get in so we shouldnt have a problem unless there is a problem with the mortgage or something else.
I am having such a hard time keeping all my wedding/house buying/work appointments straight! Thank God for blackberry!!!
