Some places offer two, which of course raises the price - but at the same time, I want awesome photos...
What are some of your thoughts about two photographer's - is it necessary?

I think so - we want to have one photog near us the whole time, and one milling around to catch the little details / take pics of party...
Also for the ceremony, one stands at the altar to get you coming down the aisle, while the other can get shots from behind / guest reactions at the same time.
I totally think it's worth it, JMO though.

We were only offered one....I feel that if you have 2 you have double chances of getting awesome pics. I don't think I would pay extra for a 2nd though.

lots of photogs have 2 people per wedding as sandard now... a main photog and an assistant

This is true. We actually had 3 there- 2 photogs and an assistant and had about 5,000 photos.

We had 2 photogs and an asst (who really just held the light screen and stuff like that) but we knew we wanted 2 photogs from the start.
With 2, you can capture photos like you looking at FH while he's looking at you, and pictures from different angles. Actually we were surprised when some photogs were like, nah, you don't need 2. A lot seemed to base it on # of guests... We are very happy we got 2 photogs.

we're having around 175 people. The extra photographer is around $1k - so assuming it's worth it?
who did everyone use? So far we looked at Parken, Michaels, Abbey & Abella (from NJ).

We used Duet. They ONLY do photography teams.

I think the 2nd is worth it. You can get the same moment from different angles or catch guest reactions.
I'm also insane and having 2 photographers AND 2 videographers.
ETA: My 2nd photographer takes more of a photojournalistic perspective

We are only having one photographer but we are adding zap shots through our DJ. This way they can get some candid shots!

We're using one.. but reading some of these comments now makes me want an assistant or a 2nd photographer... But we also have the zap shots on our DJ package...

I used 1 photog and had 1100 pics. I loved them soooo much I wish I had more of them. So, if its in your budget...I would go for the second photog!

I would say you only NEED one but the 2nd is worth it! Most places we visited offered 2 and an assistant w/ the option of bumping one of the photogs out to save $. If it is a budget issue then dont stress it, but if you have the $ why not ensure you get loads of pics

We used Thomas Paul, and we had 2 photographers and 1 assistant. Although my wedding was small (125) I knew I always wanted 2 photographers, to catch different views/angles on things.

I specifically wanted 2 for one reason.. when the main photographer is on me, I want a photographer on him during special moments. When I'm coming down the aisle, I want somebody to take a picture of his face. The rest of the day is just a bonus.
