How Much Are Pugs?

25% of all animals in shelters are purebreds.
There are special pug rescue centers as well. Most dogs abandoned in shelters or rescues are wonderful, they are there b/c the owners were either not responsible in adopting and didn't want to make the commitment, or b/c of some other human issue - not b/c there is anything wrong w/the dog....

While I can appreciate the thought behind this statement I think it should be tempered a bit. There is nothing wrong with responsible owners buying animals from responsible breeders. And the insinuation that there would be something wrong with me or my pup because he came from a quality breeder is really insulting.

I totally agree -- don't support puppy mills by buying from pet stores; don't support irresponsible backyard breeders who are adding to the unwanted pet popultion by their actions; get your dog neutered/spayed; invest the time and money in good obedience training; understand that by getting a pet you are making a life-long comitment.

However, the insinuation that there is something morally wrong about not getting your pet through a shelter is extremely judgemental. Many serious pet owners, knowing that they are making a life-long comitment, are looking for specific qualities in their pets. Spending time researching breeds, breeders and pedigrees, along with meeting the pup's parents help them to make an informed decision and provide the best home for the pup. Of course, adoption is wonderful and we should all do everything we can to help control the number of unwanted pets out there. I feel like we do that by being responsible pet owners.
