I think it depends on what kind of icing and stuff you get. Say the cake is 2.00 a slice then add another 2.00 a slice if you have fondent. If you go to some bakery websites they give you a sort of price.

my place offers the cake too....but I need to pay for it to be bigger (2 tiered) because we have such a small number of guests...so I thought to look for an outside bakery and see if they can do better.

I think it depends on what you get...
We went to the baker that the hall uses and sampled some of the fillings.
We picked out the type we wanted..
If it is included in the price might as well use their baker

Ours was kind of pricey...but we were happy with it. Our hall limits your choices drastically on the cake to the point of NO creative input at all...and I'd heard mixed reviews on the cake...so I didn't leave it up to chance.

Wedding Cakes can be quite pricey depending on what you want. I was going to have my dad make mine, but mine was also incuded in the price of the reception. We get to pick it out thankfully.

We wanted to get a really beautiful cake with flowers and details all over it from Ron Ben-Israel....until we found out that his cakes run $12-15 p/person. Yikes!
Mine is costing me $1500 @ 6.00 per person, but i think its worth. I didnt like the hall ones, and i found one that matched my theme perfectly. I am getting it done from cakes by jay.

We went with an outside bakery because our place was actually costing us more. Our fondant only cost $.50 more per slice which I thought was great so in total it was $350.

I'm going with the bakery that my hall uses and my cake isn't costing me anything. I know that some of the cakes out there are very expensive.

The last pic is the picture I gave her. She made my cake so beautifully and let me tell you my guests raved about it! My mom had her make a cake for my bridal shower with the same kind of cake for the wedding. Choc and white cake with white choc. moouse and dolche del leche. People knew that was the cake that was going to be at the wedding and they were asking if that was the 'awesome cake' when we were at the wedding LOVED IT! HERE IS MY BRIDAL SHOWER CAKE

I had almost the same cake as in the picture, but we had our cake designer use fresh flowers instead of fondant and it brought the price down a ton! We ended up paying 600$ (about 4$/ person) for the cake since we had the florest provide the flowers (the actual flowers we paid about fifty for)... also my baker told me that the best kept secret is that if you keep your cake at three layers it's a lot less expensive, often having that fourth layer will DOUBLE the price... anyway we got that same cake but with fresh flowers, only three layers, and it cut the price a lot!
