Since we are all talking about weddings, I was just a bit curious.
When you go to weddings, are there any factors you take into consideration when you decide on how much to give a couple???
I usually do not give less than $100, but of course I give as much as I can. No matter what, I at LEAST give $100. If it's no one that I know. If it's a friend or family member, I give them as much as I can , but never less than $200.
Do you prefer to give a gift or money??

Re: How much do YOU give at other peoples weddings?
I've given 150 in the past if I went to a wedding alone, but as couple we give 300-350 depending on the relationship. Of course if its family we give more.
I have to agree with other posters, outside of the ny metro area, people tend to give more gifts than money, and smaller amounts of money.

Always at least $300 for the two of us... when close friends/family get married about $400.

I like to give a gift off the registry and then I put cash or a check in the envelope. It depends on what I can afford at the moment.

$250-$300 and $400 if we're very close for FH and me.

i actually give less if i am in someones bridal party. being a bridesmaid is a very big expense & i just can't find the extra money. so we have given $200 if i was in the wedding & $300 if i wasn't in the wedding.
hmmm interesting, dh and i usually give more if we're in the bridal party since its obviously somebody we are very close to. I think ive heard a few others saying they give less if theyre in the bp. For some reason I always assumed the opposite

I personally hate giving money. However, that is the norm here. We usually give $250-$500 (for family) as a couple. Or $100 in cash and a lot of gifts (apart from bridal shower).
I don't believe in having people 'pay for their plate'....it's not a political fundraiser. IDK, just my opinion.
Totally agree, also it depends on who the person is, and what my financial situation is, and I truly hate when brides expect people to 'at least cover their plate'...you dont know what people can afford. No one told you to get married at a place that costs $150 per plate. Specially with the economy, we cant expect people to help fund our wedding. We made the decision to get married where we did, lets not expect people to refund us for our choice.

DH and I went to two weddings since we got married and gave $250 to each couple. We matched the gifts the bride and groom had given us....we are going to three weddings next year and will give the same....if it's family, or a really close friend, like my sister who I hope marries her boyfriend for a long time now then $400 or more

Re: How much do YOU give at other peoples weddings?
im actually glad this was brought up... because next year between april and oct I have a total of 8 weddings to attend.... I am MOH for 2 of them, in the BP for 2 more, 3 others are me or FH's family and the last one is my boss.
There is no way I'm going to be able to afford a huge amount of money for ALL of them... I'm thinking somewhere between 175 and 400 at the most... (for a couple) its really a tough situation for me, they are all really really close family and friends who just happen to be getting married at the same damn time.
Id love to pay for our plates, but the truth of the matter is, I dont know if for ALL of them we can.
i hate money :(

Wow, that really *****. You can't decline any of them??? that is really scary. I don't know if I would say yes to being in the BP if that was my scenario lol That is just way too much money. Even for being a BM in all of them...just alot.

We always give $300 unless we're very close. I was the MOH in my sister's wedding last year and we gave $1000 for that.

I love that you brought up 'at least cover your plate'. I've gotten into arguments with FMIL....she scolds us that we should give more because we want people to give us at our wedding. I always tell her, I'm not looking to break even or cover a portion of the wedding. I'm having an event I CAN AFFORD. If you're going to be ripping open envelopes to pay bills afterwards, you clearly went above your means.

Re: How much do YOU give at other peoples weddings?
I just hate the expression 'to cover your plate' a gift at a wedding should be from the heart and something you want to do to help them out. I just think that when giving a gift if the only thought in your head is 'lets just make sure to cover our plates' it takes away from the whole giving part. In my culture people do tend to give alot but the words 'to cover your plate' NEVER come up. Its said this is a gift to help the newlywed couple start their new life together.

Re: How much do YOU give at other peoples weddings?
here is a twist.....
how much do you give when you have to travel to the wedding? you are not a family member and you and DH have to buy round trip plan tickets.... now a days they are quite pricey and most people are tight on $.
We realized this is in people's minds for our wedding a bunch of people traveled and they gave what they could but it amount was less...
Just wondering any thoughts?

Re: How much do YOU give at other peoples weddings?
i cant decline any of them, first my best friend got engaged asked me to be MOH i said yes of course. than another friend asked me to be BM i said yes and then a 3rd one asked and i agreed bc shes a really good friend... at that point i said i CANT be in anyone elses wedding... of course 2 months later my sister got engaged and that was that haha. FH's cousin is getting married in ohio i never met her... luckily his parents are buying our plane tickets for us... so we just have to get a hotel and the gift.
and I already have 2 weddings to attend summer 2010. When does it end? lol
