Since we are all talking about weddings, I was just a bit curious.
When you go to weddings, are there any factors you take into consideration when you decide on how much to give a couple???
I usually do not give less than $100, but of course I give as much as I can. No matter what, I at LEAST give $100. If it's no one that I know. If it's a friend or family member, I give them as much as I can , but never less than $200.
Do you prefer to give a gift or money??

Re: How much do YOU give at other peoples weddings?
it never does end!
So are you still giving what you would if it was a local wedding? Just curious b/c I just bought my plane tickets and it's over 550.00 total for us both to fly up. And I know of course what they gave us but what they gave us was spent in tickets.... $ is tight especially since we are looking into a house. I don't know what to do

$300.00 as a couple, but more if we are really close to them or they are family members. This price doubles then.

I'd say at least $300 unless it's out of state and I had to pay to travel, then a little less.

I do think that if you gave less that its more than fine. I would definitely take into consideration if somebody travelled for my wedding and knowing how much they spent. I remember one time we had to go to Florida for a wedding and same thing we had to pay for the plane tickets and the hotel stay and just being there you do spend some money to eat and do stuff.

I just hate the expression 'to cover your plate' a gift at a wedding should be from the heart and something you want to do to help them out. I just think that when giving a gift if the only thought in your head is 'lets just make sure to cover our plates' it takes away from the whole giving part. In my culture people do tend to give alot but the words 'to cover your plate' NEVER come up. Its said this is a gift to help the newlywed couple start their new life together.
I never even heard of this expression till LIweddings- so I never knew we were 'suppose to cover our plate.' And I still dont understand how Im supposed to know what someone is paying for our plates. LOL so I just think that is silly!!

it is so true, i mean if you have a close friend that told you the price maybe but otherwise i have no clue what others spent per plate at their weddings. You can always guess and give around what you think

Re: How much do YOU give at other peoples weddings?
thanks ladies!
I don't think the couple knows how much we are paying and I would never 'throw' it at them like OMG we are paying XX for your wedding. Because it's a good excuse to see our family that is up where the wedding is. But these days with $ it's so hard I want to match what they gave which was generous but we are traveling... we wouldn't have to pay for anything else- cause we are staying with family. why must it cost so much to fly still

it doesnt matter if they know how much you're spending exactly. They still know you have to pay for plane tickets and that alone they will figure out on their own that its a few hundred dollars. So no matter what they know youre spending money to travel to their wedding which is all they need to know.

Re: How much do YOU give at other peoples weddings?
At the very least I give 200. It depends on who the person is. FH and I went to his cousin's wedding, and they are quite close.. We gave them 500, but we went to a co-workers wedding as well and gave them 250.. Like I said, depends on who the person is and how close we are to them.

HAHAHA....maybe YOU people should come to my wedding. The BraziliansI know are notorious for giving little to no money at all! and its frustrating when the wedding costs sooo much.
At my future sister in laws wedding who is also Brazilian, she had a couple of envelopes with $5 and $10 !!!!!!!!!!

im actually glad this was brought up... because next year between april and oct I have a total of 8 weddings to attend.... I am MOH for 2 of them, in the BP for 2 more, 3 others are me or FH's family and the last one is my boss.
There is no way I'm going to be able to afford a huge amount of money for ALL of them... I'm thinking somewhere between 175 and 400 at the most... (for a couple) its really a tough situation for me, they are all really really close family and friends who just happen to be getting married at the same damn time.
Id love to pay for our plates, but the truth of the matter is, I dont know if for ALL of them we can.
i hate money :(
why dont you and your friends just make a deal that you dont give each other wedding gifts? its just like trading money back and forth anyway!
