How much do you normally give as a wedding gift?

How much do you normally give as a wedding gift?

How much do you normally give as a wedding gift when you attend as a guest? I thought $100 per person was normal but have been told that I am wrong and that it is more proper to give more due to the rising costs of weddings. Thoughts?

I think it depends on how close you are with the couple and also how much you can afford at the time... the last wedding we went to we gave $200... I really don't know what is standard...

A couple of years ago we always gave $200, but in the past year or so we've been giving $300. It's actually more than we can afford, but that seems to be the going rate amongst our friends. I have a friend in a different circe and she gave us $200 for our wedding, so that's what we'll be giving her for hers in April. she actually did me a favor by giving a little less, because now I don't have to stretch myself for her wedding.

the smallest we have given was 300,
(you figure a plate is about 125 so you have to cover for 2 plates plus a little extra)

with fam about 400-500 maybe more depending if i like my fam member or not lol .
plus giving that much did not matter to us right noe because we are (hopefully) going to make it right back

Depends....who and where it is.
Who being since if its a close friend, you may want to give more. If not, ususually what it would to cover your plate and then a little over that.
If you dont know what that # may be....I think $100 or so is good. Sometimes you cant expect to cover your plate where I was at a wedding and found out they paid $200 and up. Not my fault you went above and beyond...I dont have that kind of $$$$ and times that by 2!!!

I guess it really depends on who it is.

So, do you tell people how much per plate you are spending and then hope they cover it? no offense soon2brsp, but i found that this thought process absurd.
I feel you give what you can afford and what you feel appropriate based on your relationship. If I was going to a wedding of a business acquantaince let's say, at Oheka, I would not give that person more than I would give my best friend getting married in their backyard... sorry for the rant

Like I said i give what a plate usually goes for which is about 125 . this is what i do
you can do what you feel is better for you but yes an average plate now a days is about 125 so it would BE NICE to at least cover that JMO

LOL it's ok to rant i do it too . but going through the whole wedding planning at least now i see how much things go for ,..

I was one of those brides that spent in that price range and I didn't expect people to cover their plates. I knew I spent a lot pp and that was my decision. I was ok with the $200 gifts, though I have to say, I was a little annoyed when people gave me less than that per couple. The couldn't have begun to think I spent under that per plate.

some people cover and some people dont
now dont get me wrong but if someone had a wedding where the plate was 500 no way am i giving 1000 .. i go by what an AVERAGE plate goes for at theleast is about 300 a couple

if someone want to have a 500 pp plate then beat it i wont give 1000 lol . there are some limits here lol im no rockafella -I WISH

I usually give $150 each ($300 total). If it's a really good friend, I give $500.

I used to give $100 per person, but now that I know how much weddings actually cost I give at least $250, usually around $300.

If I know the bride and groom are paying for the wedding themselves, I'm usually more generous than if I know that the parents are paying

You said the key word, EXPECT! Im not cheap at all and have gone above and beyond in covering my plate and then some. I try to do the right thing knowing that one day, my time will come. I do hear you on the ones who cheese out in the envelope( and can afford it).
Again, you said did not EXPECT and thats why it was ok and you werent dissappointed.
The wedding I was referring to had some dissappointments because they were not getting what they felt they deserved(spent).

The last 2 weddings we have gone to, we gave $150 per person. And we did not consider what they may have paid for the wedding. It was a wedding GIFT, not a cover charge.

Re: How much do you normally give as a wedding gift?

If I went into the wedding planning thinking I wanted to get every dollar back that I had spent, I would have never chosen my hall or half of my vendors. Everyone should throw the wedding they want and can reasonable afford. Whatever cash you have at the end of it is a bonus, not a given.

I'm glad I got married first out of all my friends. This is how I set my amount. I recently was in the wedding of a very good friend. My DH and I gave her 150, which is exactly what she gave me at my wedding, when she came with her boyfriend (now husband). I really don't care if I'm being petty or whatever...you give what you get....that's that.
