how much for a groom's cake?

hi girls that know some more than i do..

i want to do a groom's cake for the dinner rehearsal for my FI.. a dome shaped baseball cake or something of the sort related to baseball (he is a college basbeall coach)

how much do they cost?? i got one quote for $5 a slice.. for 40 people - thats $200 before tax and delivery , tip, and if i want anything beyond the minimum... is that waaay tooo much??

any suggestions for bakeries that have a great reputation and taste?? thanks

Wow ... I'm not sure how much they run either... but if that's the case my groom is getting a Twinkie!

I think they run between 100 and 300 depending on the type of cake you get

The person who's doing our wedding cake will bedoing my FI grooms cake for 4 a slice. We're having it at the rehersal dinner. He has NO idea I'm getting him one!

I took a picture of my DH's guitar and brought it to BJ's... yes, BJ's. They gave me a sheetcake with a full screened picture of his guitar for $16. All of the quotes to have a guitar shaped cake wanted at least $150... yeah, whatever, it's cake. We were paying for the wedding entirely ourselves and I couldn't see myself spenging that much money on the cake at the rehearsal. Everyone thought it was cute and BTW tasted better than most bakery cakes.

im surprising mine too!! ok - i will start calling - i go to the bakery for the wedding in a month or so..

I think I spent like $100 on his cake. It was in the shape of a Yankee Jersey with all the details. It really turned out great .

wow...i could go into business. i've made more specialty cakes than is even fair....i would be afraid to make a groom's cake and charge for it though so i'm not volunteering.

IMO, i think a standard baker could make you a comparable cake and not charge nearly as much...you might have to forego the actual shape, but you shouldn't spend a fortune on it either.

Audrey's in Sayville does a great job with specialty cakes. I got quoted $225 for a cake in the shape of a Harley because my FH desperately wants one. I told him I would be having about 50-60 people and he said that would be fine. I didn't think that was too unreasonable. I like the idea about taking a picture and getting it put onto the cake. BJs and Costco do have great cakes and very cheap!!
