how much for an e-party gift?

Original post by Kara and Todd

I've never been to an e-party and I didn't have one. I'm in a good friend's wedding party (getting married in '09) and her engagement party is coming up. They aren't registered yet and I know she could use (and wants) cash... The party is at a Firehouse and her FMIL is hosting (and doing all the cooking!)

I know everything is relative in terms of what people can and cannot afford, so it's tough to ask for a dollar amount suggestion. Is half of what I would give her as a wedding gift appropriate? (Just as an example, if we were going to give $300 as a wedding gift, we'd give $150 for an e-gift.)

I know it's personal, but if anyone is willing to share the range of gifts they got as e-party gifts, I would appreciate it.

Thanks a lot!

ETA Please note that $150 was merely an illustration / example... I'm not saying $150 is what we'd give. I'm saying we'd give half of what we'd give at the wedding...

I personally didn't have an engagement party for this reason - I think they are 'greedy' - and I dont think that a gift should be given for an engagement, especially when most of the same people will be attending your shower, bach. party...wedding, etc. I think it all loses site of what it is. My FH and I decided NOT to have one for that reason!

I don't understand a BIG engagement party - that is what the WEDDING is for.

so ppl who have it are greedy? lol thank you for generalizing.

When i had an e-party it had nothing to do with 'GREED' first of all EVERYONE i know has one, so honestly for me it was the norm, its one of those things you grow up with and its custom with your family and friends so you dont think twice about it, not until i came on here i saw posts about being greedy or calling it a fundraiser and i never looked at it like that, i guess if its not the norm to the way things are done with your friends and family I can understand this, and also i wouldn't say mean things about ppl bc they do things differently and generalize. Infact when we got engaged everyone kept asking us 'so when is the engagement party' Fh's family even said its about time his family had a big party, his extended family has parties for everything . The only way i looked at it was that i was excited to be engaged and we wanted to celebrate with loved ones, for ppl to think of money right away shows thats what they're thinking, i didnt think OMG we can make money off of this. I also thought it would be GREAT if our families got to meet before the wedding, and not just our parents which they had already, so this way by the time of the wedding everyone knows eachother, ppl will interact more and none of the just meeting at the wedding, these were my thoughts and it was great my family met his whole extended family, they hung out, danced together and had a good time.

Also for the fact that most ppl we know have e-parties it wasnt a big deal, and on top of that for most of our guests WE have been to their weddings, showers, baby showers, christenings, graduation parties, second marriages, yes eparties too, anniversary parties. AND whoever is against e-parties they didnt have to come, they could've just rsvp'd no, not like i was gonna hunt ppl down and ask why, its their personal decision and i respect people for that and yes respect ppl even for their differences.

Not to mention that it costs money to throw an e-party lol, how does anyone know they would even get back more than they paid lol. On top of the catering hall or restaurant, we had to pay for invitations, flowers, favors, i did DIY menu's and spent alot on even just paper, materials, bought our own vases, candles, i bought table runners.

i love eparties im having one december 7th and i can not wait for it...there will be about 210pp there and i can not wait tocelebrate with them all...
it is not about 'greed' or for a 'fundraiser'
it is because i want to enjoy this time being engaged and enjoy every aspect of the process leading up to my wedding day....
and tradition of my family and circle of friends and the community that i live in engagement parties are part of the norm....
so it is a bit rude to say that people who want engagement parties are greedy or looking for money to pay for their wedding......

as far as gift giving goes it is all by what you can afford

typically I give gifts according to if i recieved a gift from the person whose party it is (my sister got married last year to i can generally see what people gave according to her gifts) this is an italian thing to do

and it generally turns out to be for eparty at least 150 generally 200 for a couple with a little picture frame in addition to the money

wedding generally 350 per couple
if you are in bridal party at least 450
and if it is a sister/brother about 1k

as far as bridal showers
ALWAYS GIFTS FROM REGISTRY and at least a gift totaling about 150

No one gave us more than $500 for our wedding gift -- and we have an extremely generous (and not lacking in income) family and friends.

You have beyond generous friends and relatives! Wow!

ETA - Our average wedding gift was close to $300, many in the $200-250 range and several in the $350-500 range. I was shocked by people's generosity... I wasn't expecting even half of the gifts we got.

I think that's a decent amount.

BTW, what we plan to give them at their wedding is probably double what they gave us... They were extremely generous based on what they can afford. We happen to make more and will be as generous as they were, considering our income. It's not about matching a dollar amount for me. People have different incomes, expenses, and priorities with their money.

I just wanted to make sure we were on track for how we were planning to figure out what to give.

it all goes by what you feel comfortable giving and what you can afford...if they gave you a gift and were generous with what they gave you then be similiar with the generosity

i agree, dont worry about matching it, personally i never do...Like i said everybody has different circumstances, maybe they just bought a house, still in school or whatever the reason might be. Just give what you are comfortable with

For our eparty we got gifts in the range of 50-150. There were some higher but those were the average. I was surprised by most peoples genorosity. I also dont see an eparty as a ' fundraiser' In my family and with most of my friends its a tradition. It is something that I have grown up with. I made it clear that if people came with nothing, that would be fine. I just wanted my family and friends there to celebrate my engagement. One of our BM/GM (a couple) didnt give us anything due to financial reasons and I was understanding.

I did have a coworker of mine (who I didnt invite)pass a comment towards the effect of ' she only invited a lot of people from work because she wanted a lot of gifts' to say that I was pisssssed and annoyed is an understatement because that was furtherst from the truth.

Wow, FH's parents threw us and his brother (who also got engaged) a joint party in their backyard, which was also a homecoming for their other son (coming home from Iraq for 2 weeks R&R)

Anyway, FH's parents told everyone not to bring gifts, so we pretty much got some wine glasses and few bottles of wine from the neighbors. Thats it! It pretty much ******. Also, my mom flew in for it from Pittsburgh and FH's parents NEVER made an announcement congratulating us. It was all about the homecoming of his brother.

Kinda ******. Ive never even been to a real Engagement party! I probably wouldnt have given a huge gift because I wouldnt have known I was supposed too!

Now I know!

My BMs gave me each $100 and then chipped in for a bunch of gifts...so in the end it probably came out to $150 per person!
