How much money should I take with me on my HM? w poll

We are leaving at 3m Monday morning - so We have to be at the bank by 1pm. We are going to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. How much Cash shoulod we take with us? Should we use travelers checks?? HELP! Im clueless

Im going to an allinclusive resort (excellence at Punta cana) and there is gambling - but its been a WHILE since ive gone anywhere!

i definitely say both!!

you always a liittle cash on you (tens, fives, singles, twenties)
but you should carry hundreds of dollars because its nto safe.

a little cash and i would take 1 credit card- amex is best!! put any room charges on the card so you can see what you get charged for.

leave the traveler's cheques at home--IMHO they are utterly useless these days. its hard to use them and remember when you get change from them, you will receive it back in their currency (RD) and they have to convert it at whatever the exchange rate is.

i was just in DR a 3 wks ago,and its best you use cash and cards. you don't need much cash at an AI resort, find a bartender the first day and toss them a $5 or $10 and you'll get strong drinks all week! i would bring a lot of singles with me, which is what DH and i did. so when we had meals at the buffet or dinner at nite we could leave a little bit on the table even though its 'all inclusive'

I completely agree!
I went with FH last year and we brought cash and barely even used any of it. Except at the casino or to leave a little extra for waiters/bartenders etc.
And if you want to buy some souveniors just haggle with them and pay in cash.

If its an allinclusive resort you wont need much cash but I would still bring both. Any time I have traveld out of the US I always bring both just incase!

oh and i wanted to add---if you buy souvenirs off the resort.....HAGGLE, HAGGLE, HAGGLE!!!! they will give you one price, but you shouldn't have to pay more than half the price they give you!

down the beach from our resort they had litle huts where people from a few other resorts could buy stuff....and boy oh boy we had to haggle like crazy!

you do not need a lot of $$ in the DR...IMHO, do not leave the resort unless you are going on an excursion, which you can pay with your credit card. The only thing I used cash for when I went there was to buy jewelry on the beach. (very negotiable by the way)

If you look at the jewelry, I recommend larimar...it is a gemstone only found in the DR

I love the pieces I bought!

we went to Iberostar Bavaro all suites in Punta Cana also....i have a bunch of pics -- feel free to FM me if you want more info.

like others said--i do NOT recommend leaving the resort unless you do an authorized tour from your tour operator from the resort. everyone says the ATV tour is the best one -- but we didn't feel like doing it, but everyone raved about it.
