Re: how much should i be looking to spend..
you gotta feel things out and compare prices for what youre looking for and where. different areas/basement/walkups/all inclusive/# of bedrooms/etc will affect prices. your best bet is to check on craigslist and just start going to check places out. be prepared to shop around though... good luck so exciting!!!

Oh wow!! FH and I are looking at 2 bedroom apts. in Suffolk and are going to be spending $1700. My mom actually has a condo she's renting out for $1600 in Suffolk but it wasn't close enough to work for me. If anyone is interested let me know.

Re: how much should i be looking to spend..
To give you an idea:
We rent in a complex with a large 2 bedroom/1 bath for $1 300, plus cable and lipa which runs an addition $270. So, $1570 total. We could have gotten something for less $$ but it was important for us to live in a complex as opposed to someone's basement because we were afraid of getting a crappy landlord and we like to have people over, also FH can't fit in basement apartments.
Its all relative, but I personally can't stand people who try to rent an apartment to cover their mortgage; I saw one apt. being advertised as a 'large motel room' with no kitchen for $1k plus utilities
It all depends on what you want, what you have to have or can sacrifice and where you want to live

Depending on what you're looking for you can definitely find a NICE place for between $1200-1600/month.

We live in Queens *rego park/forest hills border) for $1300 a month. 1 bedroom. We got a good deal. A lot of places I saw were $1500.
I know people who live in bayside 1 bedroom for $1700, but I know people who live in FreshMeadows for $1500 3 bedroom.
Look on craigslist to get ideas. I got all my apt through that.
