Re: how much should i be looking to spend..
depending on if utilities are included or not, for a 1 bedroom, it will be from $1200 and up to around $1700
a 2 br will be around $1450 and up, also depending on what utilities are included

I just rented out my 1 bedroom apartment in Howard Beach Queens (Lindenwood area) for $1,150 a month. Heat and hot water included in rental - its a 6 story building with laundry in the lobby level.

I live there in a co-op, but I own it....Little Neck/Douglaston. In my development we can't rent, but in Parwood Estates, they can sublet...they are co-ops also, off Little Neck Parkway. My friend rents one now. I will call her tomorrow and ask her what she's paying in rent. I think she's in a 1br. She's getting married in March and moving out of there into her FH's house. I repost tomorrow w/ more info.

To give you an idea:
We rent in a complex with a large 2 bedroom/1 bath for $1 300, plus cable and lipa which runs an addition $270. So, $1570 total. We could have gotten something for less $$ but it was important for us to live in a complex as opposed to someone's basement because we were afraid of getting a crappy landlord and we like to have people over, also FH can't fit in basement apartments.
Its all relative, but I personally can't stand people who try to rent an apartment to cover their mortgage; I saw one apt. being advertised as a 'large motel room' with no kitchen for $1k plus utilities
It all depends on what you want, what you have to have or can sacrifice and where you want to live
