How much should you send if you can't go to the wedding and you don't know the person?

Ok here's the situation.....a woman I work with has invited me to her son's wedding in Indianappolis.....obviously we are not flying there to attend the wedding but I feel like I still need to send a gift. How much is appropriate to send. Oh and bye the way I've only met the son once...when I was invited to their engagement party. Thanks

I would send them something small off their registry.

I agree with Christine. I would check out their registry and pick out a 'token' gift. Since you're not going to the wedding and you don't really know the couple too well, I think this is more than enough and will be appreciated! :)

Small, off registry, is exactly what I would do. Another great option that is one of my secret safety gifts is a silver frame engraved with the new couple's name off of Pottery Barn (their second plug from me today on LIW-wow) -- only around $40 and really elegant and EVERYONE loves.

Now does it matter that the mom came to my wedding and gave $100? Do I have to send $100 too?

I think a registry gift is a good idea too. Ive been living in Indy for 2 years and here people dont give $ for wedding gifts as often as on LI/NY

I don't think so, you know the mom. BUT, we always give way too much so I would listen to someone else :)

IMO, no. The mom came to your wedding, so she would try to cover her plate in a gift. You're not going to the wedding. They are not putting out any expense for you. I would not match what the mother gave.

So far, from the no's we have gotten anywhere between $25 (from FH's great aunt - we didn't expect ANYTHING so this was very thoughtful) to $150. We might not be inthe norm, but we are really not expecting gifts from our no's. I think something from the registry will be generous and appreciated. I wouldn't do anything engraved unless you know the couple. The bride might not be changing her name and could get offended if you do 'Mr & Mrs'.
