How much time do I need to get a marriage license

We are taking a day off from work, but we have so many things to do that day. Once we get to the municipal building, how long will it take to get the license?

We were literaly in and out in 20 minutes.. we went first thing in the morning to the hempstead location, and there was NOONE in there... they asked some questions ex..moms name dads name, if you were married before..then they make copies of your licence (drivers) and thats it.. they give you a really cool bag full of free samples.. i loved the papertowel napkins!!!

Do you need an original copy of your birth certificate or is just your driver's license enough?
TIA!

A license is enough. Any original form of ID, I would say be safe with a picture ID.

you also need something that shows your social security number - SS card, pay stub, insurance card, etc.

We were in and out fast - 15-20 minutes sounds right.

We went to the Smithtown Town Clerk

fh only has passport...no license (yet - long story) and no ss card...do you think a paycheck is enough? He does have a letter from SS though

Yabbobay, call the town hall where you plan to go, thats what i did, they are the ones that told me his work id was going to be good enough...i asked if a credit card was ok, and she said well if thats all you have but something with a picute would be better, even though he had the licence..

Definitely call where you intend to go. The first time we went, we had to walk out because we didn't have the forms of ID they were requesting. I can't really recall what it was that tripped us up, but we had to leave .. of course, we didn't ask anyone if they would take whatever we had .. like work IDs or paystubs, we just left because no one seemed interested in helping us at that point, anyway.

When we went back with what we needed, they took a little while to get to us, even though we were the only people there, but when we sat to do the license, it went quick.

This sounds silly, but make sure you know your mother's maiden name and where your parents were born, as well as where you were born. And be prepared to provide them with an address of where you'll be after the wedding.

Yes, I did. My mom was born in Europe. All they wanted to know was where .. like what country .. not the very fine detail of what hospital.

Re: yabbobay

a passport should be fine. You don't necessarily need a DL, just a govt issued photo ID, so the passport qualifies.

As for foreign born parents - both of Al's parents were born in Europe. I think we just told them the countries (Italy & Germany) and they were fine with that.

The area where my FIL was born doesn't even exist anymore - its part of Poland now. They just need something to write down. You'll be fine.

Marriage license dilemma

I live in California and will be getting married in Smithtown. I will be arriving in NY 2 days before the wedding and plan on going to NY a couple of months before the wedding too. What is the time constraints that I am facing, ie. How far in advance can I get it and also does my fiance have to be present or can I just bring his info?

Re: Marriage license dilemma

you need to bring him and you can get it 60 days before the wedding.. but it takes 24 hours to validate it so if your getting married on a sat. you need to have it by thursday..

I am getting married in about 8 weeks. Should I go to get my mariage license yet? I know there is a certain amount of time that you have to wait.
