Re: How much would you spend...
I would say more like 1500 per couple. we had looked into this as well and our parents vetoed the idea as many family members would not beable to spend this much on our wedding and both sets were strongly against the idea. we then took a step back and looked at why we were even considering this and we figured out it was b/c we did not like our first hall we also looked into destinations here or somewhere close; The pier restaurant (this is on fire island further point east before smith point) they close it and basically you have the whole space. HUGE outdoor area adn a huge indoor area with all exposed wood. beautiful setting and very afforable. The Pridwin on Shelter Island. Food is AMAZING. This is definetly a destinatoin for some people. Hotel right there as well wiht hte beach across the street. Shelter Island is super cute in the summer. We just went toa wedding there a few weeks ago and it was GORGEOUS! Block Island has many places to have a wedding

Re: How much would you spend...
i would have loved to do this to but i already picked my bridal party and its about 10 girls. My FMIL does not like to fly and my grandma is in no condition to go that far for a wedding. So we opted for a LI Wedding which im happy i stuck with!!
Good luck with your planning if you can coordinate everything!! I def think it is easier if you invite less people just my opinion!

Re: How much would you spend...
Keep in mind it is not just the cost that prevents people from coming to a destination wedding... We are invited to my FH cousin's wedding in DR two weeks after our wedding...Not only will we be setting up house, but we both have that much vacation time...We will use some for our planning, hm and would like to save a week for the holidays... Other people are declining due to age, can't fly etc.. Just keep that in mind if you are wanting alot of people to come... Some can and will have a blast with you.. My first wedding (I am widowed) was on a cruise.. We got married and sailed with alot of our immediate families...14 came on the cruise, 10 came to see the ceremony and got off the ship...It was perfect for us.. We paid for the 14 people's cruises and it was soo worth it as there wasn't much planning and ALOT of fun.

Re: How much would you spend...
Our friends are planning on a destination wedding in jamaica in july 2011 (however, nothings booked yet, so let's see if it actually happens). And I am sooooo excited to go! I already told FH that it will be a mini vaca for us, not our annual yearly vaca, but let's see how much it will cost.
Anyways, if ppl care about u, they'll go

Re: How much would you spend...
I would spend about $1500 per couple. Many people choose to attend a destination wedding because they obviously care for the couple and they use that as a mini vacation.
I have gone to 3 destination weddings and usually the number of attendees is small. However, you have an intimate crown and it feels more special (in my opinion). The only thing is that because we had to travel and spend money to get to these destinations, we had to put less money in the envelope. I think it is understood that if you have a destination wedding, you will be jeopardizing 'maximizing your return' on monetary gifts.

Re: How much would you spend...
I think $1500 pp for 4 nights is REALLY expensive. That means $3000 per couple for a long weekend. I don't think I would spend that for anyone but immediate family - especially not in this economy.

have you looked into Excellence or El Dorado ? We honeymooned at Excellence Playa Mujeres and it was amazing and really reasonable. I think El Dorado was even cheaper

Re: How much would you spend...
it depends how close i am to the person. if i wasn't close to them i def wouldnt pay $1500.
we have a wedding in calif this coming weekend and to go there for 3 nights, hotel is $1000, flights another $1000, rental car another couple hundred...then on top of that you have to give a gift!!!

I think thats unfair to say. Why would you expect people to lay that money out when they have kids college tuitition, mortgages, car payments etc. People have their own obligations. Plus some people scramble to go on 1 vacation a year w their families. Time off is a valuable commodity.
I think its rude to expect people to go. Its your wedding not theirs. If it was me i'd have to take time off, board my dogs, get a passport etc. Saying that i dont care about that person is presumptuous. Plus if i wanted to go on vacation, it wouldnt be w people i dont spend time with on a normal basis.
And...i have a 90 yo grandmother. Would you expect someone that age to fly 5 hrs and stay in 100 degree heat?
Its rude and selfish.

Re: How much would you spend...
As much as FH and I wanted to do this, we opted not too. I could not expect families to pay that and to take time off. Also FH's father does not fly.
We decided to have a LIW and its only going to be about 115-120 people.
It is possible to cut costs for a wedding even if you don't want anything elaborate. (hence why I am a winter bride )
overall I also feel that planning a destination wedding is just as stressful as a tranditional wedding.
But people who want to come will come and you can always have a small party after your destination wedding
Good luck!!!
PS I would go to a destination wedding. If FH and I could get a mini vacation out of it, why not?!!

Re: How much would you spend...
I think $1,500pp or $3,000 per couple is WAY too much for Mexico! I've only been once; but did not find Mexico to be that expensive at all!
FH & I paid about that for 5 days 4 nights in turks & caicos for his best friends DW 3 years ago. This was before we bought our house; before we got our dog and before we were engaged. I don't think i could pay that much again. A friend of mine got married last year in Dominican Republic and the price was about $1,500 for 4 days 3 nights and i just couldn't afford to go. As long as you can understand that some people...even those that really care for you can't make it then pick where you want.

I agree-my friend did not feel this same way-see my post above.

Re: How much would you spend...
I wouldn't spend more than $1500 a couple.. I just went to a DW in the DR and it cost about $1800 for the 2 of us to go for 4 nights. We didn't end up liking the resort at all, and we were kind of upset we spent that much money, but it was for FH's close friend and he was in the wedding party. I think that for 4 nights it is a little pricey to even spend that. I would do your best to keep the cost lower, or pick a resort with all different room options that people could spend that $1500pp if they wanted, but could also get down there for like $1000... Should be doable in Mexico. Also consider doing a nice resort that is in walking distance of another cheaper resort, might help with the issue
