dress shop: about 11 months before register: about 6 months before lose my mind: hasn't happened yet, but there's still time!
But I think it all depends on the length of your engagement - I was engaged in late Dec. 06 and am getting married in Nov 07, so it wasn't that long. For you, with a longer engagement, you might want to register sooner if you are having an e-party. You should dress shop whenever you feel the urge because it's FUN and you have time to try a ton of styles and pick the perfect dress for you!

registered after we booked e-party..about 2 months after engagement
dress shop...about 1 year prior to wed month
lose mind- not yet but I will most likely in March (wedding in April) LOL

We Register a couple months after we were engaged.
I tried on my 1st and only bridal gown in September 2005. The 1st dress I fell in love with.
Loose My Mind When my FSIL started complaining about her daughters not being involved in the wedding. One daughter was not even born at the time (she was in moms tummy) But, they are all involved because I am a nice person.
I have two Jr. Bridesmaids and four Flower Girls.

registered a month after getting engaged.. so far no one has purchased anything.
dress shopped when my year till mark was up ordered the dress on my 9 month mark.

I'm pretty sure I lost my mind loooong before we got engaged
My sister had me out dress shopping, the day after FH proposed! She was really excited
We started registering about 1 month ago and finished up yesterday

just a heads up - i think it is a good idea to register now for the reasons stated above but i would stay away from linens and bedding right now, they tend to get discontinued more than kitchen appliances, etc. - and you can always go back and add more later. congrats on your engagement btw!!! i know it's been a long time coming!

sanity was restored once the programs were printed, the placecards were all tied to their starfish, and the favors were all made... about 1 month prior...

We registered about 7 months in advance. I wanted to get it done before the rush of the holidays for our May 07 wedding.
I went dress shopping one year before the wedding.
I lost my mind about 2 months before the wedding. LOL We were in the process of buying a house and paying for the wedding so it got a little hectic.
