we are having our final meeting with our dj tomorrow night, and i'm making our 'must play' and 'do not play' lists and i was just wondering how specific most people get with their dj's?

I was super specific. I gave him all the names of songs for entrance, first dance, father/daughter dance...etc.
Then I gave him a spreadsheet with songs we would like for our cocktail hour, dinner music and dance songs for the reception.

So did we. Not that I doubt my DJ but this way I cant kick myself later on for not hearing any particular songs.
However, I am glad to see that I am not crazy as everyone seems to tell me. There is another organized in control bride out there.

We were very specific and our DJ really appreciated it. This way he knows EXACTLY what we want and don't want.

LOL oh my gosh, you girls crack me up... i feel better to know i'm not alone though... my lists were getting pretty specific and long. i know the djs are supposed to work their magic... it's just that a music can make or break an event and i'm so picky. i went to a wedding a couple of weeks ago and i hate to say it, but i derived much of my 'do not play' list from that night. i'd like to ask all your girls to post your 'books'!!!

I was so specific we programmed the ENTIRE thing (ceremony, coctail hour, reception) and gave him 13 discs already mixed by FH! We're MUSIC GEEKS...
ETA - We're having a casino for the entertainment. We don't dance and neither does the majority of our guests. The DJ himself told me - you can only expect at most 30% to be out dancing - so what's everyone ELSE doing? The feedback is overwhelmingly positive from my future guests (especially the guys) that they are looking forward to coming

we were specific, but not super-specific.... gave him a list of a few songs we wanted to hear, and a few do not play songs.... plus, the songs we wanted for special dances. other than that, i felt like they do this every weekend, they know what works and doesnt' work- they're the pros, not me. i'm glad we did it this way, because we went to a wedding a few months after ours and the bride had given the DJ a list of every song to play and told him not to deviate from her list. problem was, they were all HER taste in music, and not really ' party' music and she was getting upset becasue nobody was dancing! i think you have to let the DJ know what you like, but you also have to let him do his job, too

My FH was laughing at me while our DJ was going over my lists. I spent a few months listening to different radio stations that include play lists with their webcasting so I could write down the title and artist of songs I disliked. After all, if you don't like a song, do you really know the name of it and who sings it????? That list gave our DJ a very solid idea of what I DON'T want to hear played at the wedding.
Then I gave him a list of songs 'more my speed' based on the same months of radio surfing.
Then I printed the top 200 requested wedding songs and highlighted everything I didn't want to hear at the wedding. I also highlighted songs I didn't know or couldn't hum immediately by reading the name and artist.
Then I gave him the exact artist and title of every song for everything special (ceremony, first dance, cake cutting etc).
I am confident I will not hear any song I hate at my wedding.

we gave a list of about 45 songs that we wanted played and highlighted the must play ones. we told him the genres of music we did not want played
