How to become a teacher?

How to become a teacher?

My husband is looking for a career change. He has a B.S. in mathmatics, is an excellent public speaker & is really good with kids. I thought he would make a great math teacher.

Can anyone outline the process for becoming a teacher on Long Island? Is it difficult to find a job as a teacher these days?

Are the requirements the same for being a substitute?

We live in Suffolk County. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Call Dowling College. They have an excellent teaching program. THey will look at all of the classes he took in undergrad and tell him what classes he needs and how long it will take. I know so many people who made this decision and Dowling was so helpful. They are also really good with student teaching placements.

You can sub w/o cert. in many districts, it just pays less. I graduated w/ my masters in december and am certified, Have been subbing since January, and I will tell you that It is a very difficult time for new teachers looking for a job on LI!!! My resume is out in 47 districts and NO ONE is hiring now due to the state budget cuts courtesy of Mr. Pataki!!! Many teachers are protesting in Albany on May 3. Many of the retirees this year are not being replaced and there is talk of doing away with spec. ed programs/classes and enlarging regular class size. There is perhaps a chance that hiring might start up again in the summer if things change, but who knows. I would have to say that from what I've seen there seems to be slightly higher need for secondary teachers in subjects like math and science, than there is for regular elementary k-6 teachers though!
