For those that actually know about the area... I've been reading msgboards that give mixed feelings for West Babylon and Lindenhurst. We originally were looking at North Babylon, but heard that the schools arent too great. Any feedback?

Re: How would you describe these LI towns?
My aunt lives right by Lindenhurst and I know it doesn't have good school districts - it is right next to Amityville

Re: How would you describe these LI towns?
I live in Amity Harbor and I hate the name because it sounds like Amityville. It's actually part of Copaigue and between Lindenhurst and Massapequa, well, in Copaigue. Anyway, I happen to like Lindenhurst and I feel really safe in this area. I know that my neighborhood, be it all of about 8 streets is really safe and very, very quiet. I wouldn't send my kids to school here (Copaigue sd is only marginally better than Amityville) but I'm a byproduct of parochial school snobbery. I think Lindenhurst has its appeals

I live in Lindenhurst. The schools are great but it isn't Amityville or Copiague. The lower schools are better than the HS.
West Bablyon has amazing schools....Their HS is one of the best around but be careful because some house in West babylon are in the Wyndanch School district.

yes, i've found that out through my research! you have to be really careful with the zoning over there.... there was a site suggested on a msgboard that will tell you what areas are zoned for what school districts, but i dont know how to use it!! can someone help?
I know that my when my Real Estate Agent prints up the report on a house, it tells you what SD # it is for that house so you can double check it!

Re: How would you describe these LI towns?
I live in West Babylon (rent - don't own) The school district is very good (I have a friend who teaches at the HS). West Babylon schools are actually rated higher than Babylon village schools (which I think is a prettier neighborhood - JMO!). They are also rated higher than Lindenhurst. I love Amityville Village but would never move there unless we can afford to send our kids to private school. My mom lives there now south of Montauk Highway and it's beautiful but she didn't move there until we were all grown.
I used this website to investigate areas before we started our house search (we're still looking almost a year later - that's a whole other story), but this helped narrow down the school districts for us.
I live in north babylon, not the greatest schools but by far not the worst. My zip code is actually West Babylon so you do have to confirm exactly what school district it is.If you want to be in this area I would recommend the babylon area. FH and I wanted to live there but was priced out of that area. You can actually find a house with a West Babylon zip code but Babylon school district and the taxes are acutally lower than in the village itself. I love the small villagey feel of that town HTH

FH lives in west babylon- it really depends on the area of west babylon... south of sunrise is nice... hes right on the north side (seriously about 5 houses away from sunrise) and the area is mostly italian (which is great for his family as they were born in italy) lindenhurst is about the same... my god mother lives there as does a lot of my friends...
i went to north babylon hs, my brother lives in north babylon. I LOVE THAT SCHOOL!!!!!!!! my nephew is in middle school now and is in high honors... the schools aren't bad. granted the high school tends to have some problems.. but ALL high schools do. north babylon is similar to west babylon... the NORTH part of north babylon isn't as 'ritzy' as the southern side. my brothers house is for sale... his block (don't ask why) is the lowest tax out of ALL of north babylon.
the house is a perfect starter home. We would buy it, but its a little out of our price range. but we're there EVERYDAY (no joking)

I am from Lindenhurst and depending where you are looking some areas are nicer than others. ZI personally do not like North Lindenhurst to live in. I would stay more towards south of sunrise highway as far as south of montauk highway. The schools are not bad around here. FH and I are also looking for a house and are looking in this area or West Babylon which is very nice. Good luck in your search.

Re: How would you describe these LI towns?
I grew up in Lindenhurst, and bought a house about 6 months ago in West Babylon.
I think Lindy is ok- like anywhere else, there are good parts (South of Montauk Hwy or south of Sunrise Hwy) and bad parts. I'm not the biggest fan, to be honest, but its decent. The primary schools are better than the secondary schools.
We actually bought a home in West Babylon (close to Montauk Hwy), very close to the border of Lindy. The reason being is that this is our starter house- by the time we have kids, we hope to move to a better area. When we were doing our house search, we saw there were a very high number of houses in Lindy for sale (disproportionate to say, Massapequa or Levittown). The houses were also much cheaper in Lindenhurst. You can get a lot more bang for your buck, in theory.
Overall, I'd say Lindy/ West Babylon is mid-range for LI- its not Great Neck or Manhasset, but its not Wyandanch either. Nearby and better schools: Bay Shore, West Islip & Babylon.
You can check out the school rankings online (we did). If you do decide to do Lindy or West Bab, stay south. Good luck!

Re: How would you describe these LI towns?
We just put an offer on a house in Lindenhurst. I happen to think its a really nice neighborhood and has a cute town with shops and restaurants. North Lindenhurst is not great area and there is also a part that is close to Copiague that I did not care for but where the house is it is a nice neighborhood. While the school districts are not the best on LI they are supposed to be good. For us we have a limited budget so we are getting the most for our money there rather than living in a 2 bedroom house in Merrick with a small lot.

Re: How would you describe these LI towns?
West Babylon is nice and is a good district. I live there now. Lindenhurst isn't too bad either. I would stay clear of North Babylon. The district isn't so hot, there are some nice areas but I can imagine that the district would bring down the value of the home. Like someone mentioned, make sure that if you are looking w. babylon that you are in that district or in babylon schools.

Re: How would you describe these LI towns?
I grew up in Lindenhurst. If you stick to the village or south of Montauk Highway you are good... stay away from North Lindy and don't go too far west south of Montauk because then you end up with Copiague schools. West Babylon has some really nice parts but stay away from going too far North because then you end up with North Babylon schools and you def don't want that.

Re: How would you describe these LI towns?
woah, listen to the copiague haters!
i am the product of copiague schools, and i turned out fine. i will admit it is getting worse, but my sister and FSIL are currently there and its not gangland or whatever.
lindenhurst is ok, but i have my issues, but if you are from copiague, you just dont like lindy. it comes with the territory.
that being said, it isn't very diverse, which i really value and want for my children. but it is better than copiague or amityville.

Re: How would you describe these LI towns?
I grew up in West Babylon! It was great. My only advice would be to stay away from the 'numbered streets' that surround Wyandanch. South of Sunrise is all good. The neighborhoods surrounding the high school are safe...and the school district is really good as well. I wish I never moved!
