How would you interpret this??

Original post by MikesBride2B

So I get this email from FMIL:

Hi, Ilana. I just came home from Kohl's where I had a $10 off coupon for a $75 purchase which expired today. Part of what I bought was a house robe for FSD to give to Mike for Christmas. It was originally $70, but was on sale today for $42. Since she has been wanting to give Mike a house robe since Father's Day, I thought I should go ahead and pick it up while one could be found and it was on sale.

I had NO idea what the goal of this email was (mainly because I don't speak cryptic, passive aggressive FMIL) so I responded this way:

Thank you for letting me know and sorry I did not get back to you sooner. Would you like me to send you a check for $42? Hope you have had a good week and have a pleasant weekend ahead of you. :)

....this is what I got back:

No need to send a check.

So obviously she is pissed? I have NO idea...did I respond incorrectly??? What the heck response was she looking for?? I am so confused

WOW. My FMIL INVENTED the term Passive Aggressive, so now, here's how I answer e mails and questions like this:

' I'm sorry, maybe I'm being ignorant, but what exactly are you asking me?'..

Workes EVERY time! It forces her to be straight, while at the same time making her uncomfortable with your directness.

Remeber, she is a insecure bully

I have had five years experience with FMIL.

its tough to say, given the past....

either she took it as an insult maybe that you were implying that she couldn't 'afford' the $42.00
or maybe she was defensive that you'd say you 'helped' pay for it...

there are different ways she could have taken it.

OR maybe she didn't have time and just wanted to let you know that she doesn't want the money for it.

Honestly I didn't take it badly at all. She might just be used to having to buy your FH xmas gifts from your FSD. My mom still does that stuff with my sister and I. She will be like I got this for you to give your godmother... ok Mom thanks, I am 27 and can handle this but alright. then she refuses to take money too. I know you have a dissicult relationship with your in laws but I personlly didn't see any bad in that.

Thanks lol...ok in that case why is she writing you this letter..to inform you what she paid for it? You didn't ask what she paid so why is she telling you. To be friendly, to chat? Do you even talk to her besides when you're with FH. If you don't, then I would find this really odd like she was looking for money.

We NEVERRRRR talk...whenever she calls the house she talks to FH or FSD...we do not chat, this is the first time she's ever emailed me before....that's why I responded asking if she wanted a check because otherwise I was totally

She defentially was hinting towards money then. She could have started out by asking you how you were doing, etc then mentioning she picked it up. Not start by going into prices and coupons.

I speak future Step Mother greekenese!!!

Do you have a good relationship with your FSD? Does FMIL get very territorial with FSD?

You can take it two ways:

1) Just so you know so if FSD wants you to buy him one for xmas (I buy my SD's gifts for FH).

2) I am super Grandma and I thought of FSD before you...and I always will home wrecker!

Take your pick...

btw; I love my FMIL. She can get territorial but never ever in a bad way...we laugh about it. She even admits it to me

was she expecting you to buy the robe from Skye instead of her? Maybe she was waiting for you to buy it all along?

LMAOOOOOO...with our history I wouldn't be surprised if she wanted it to come off as #1 but was secretly thinking #2 all along, every single minute of every single hour of every single day
