Hurricane thread

Re: Hurricane thread

I remember Gloria, I was about 8. My dad took us out during the eye of the storm and we walked down our street. We lived right off of Montaulk Hwy and the water had come up all the way there and there were fish and seaweed everywhere! It was really surreal. We lost power for a little over a week, had to cook on our bbq. That was only a cat 1. As long as everyone stays safe and inside we should all be fine its just the mess afterwards that I'm not looking forward to. Anyone with pets should find out where their local pet shelter is just in case. Nassau County's is right by Nassau Comm College at Mitchell Field. Not sure where there is one in Suffolk though.

Love the washing machine idea, just told my coworker and she thought it was genius as well! I'm suppose to get my new one delivered tomorrow!! It better come or else I have to head to the laundry mat and do a massive amount or wash tomorrow before this thing hits.

Stay safe everyone!!!

In my experience of hurricanes in NY (with the exception of Hurricane Gloria, which I don't remember anyway), they never live up to the hoop-la the newscasters talk about.

However, its always better to be prepared and safe, and then if its not bad after all, laugh later. But I don't think Irene is laughable just yet.

It's deff not a joke I agree! I'm worried more about the trees comming down and hitting cars and the after effects.. all the damage that can be made.. When Gloria hit people didnt take it sersiously either.. but people died from that and to this day my fathers boat still cannot be found when gloria hit ... luckly he wasnt in the boat when it happend tho

FH was born a month early during Hurricane Gloria! His mom went into early labor because of the air pressure from the hurricane!

Really? OH NO! Preggo's better watch out!

this is the 3rd time i've heard about this phenomenon mentioned today - i've never heard of this before! so crazy. a girl i am friends with on fb was in the hospital having early labor and someone commented that it is because of the hurricane

Hate this stupid hurricane!! I feel so awful, my sister was supposed to have her wedding tomorrow and a bunch of people said they will not be coming now. She was forced to postpone her reception but she is still having the ceremony. She is in good spirits though-- she said she would never be able to live with herself if someone was leaving her wedding and got hurt / killed!!

Is anyone in one of the 'voluntary' evacuation spots and not sure what to do??? I'm in Lynbrook South of Sunrise but about 7 miles away from Long Beach and less than 1.5 miles away from Sunrise Hwy... No idea what to do!!! I hate mother nature!!!!

I didn't even think of that! We just have the big coolers, but a washing machine filled with beer?!?!?!?!?! Genius!

You have no idea! When I was in highschool and saw my ex college 'bf' do that I freaked out and Hurricanes were no longer a thing of fear - but cause for a party.

My senior year of highschool we had 5 hurricanes and we graduated almost a month late because of all the school we missed. I also went through Andrew.

Be safe - bring any valubles up high and stock up on water...if you didnt get to the store - fill a bathtub with water in case you loose it so that there is definitely some clean (or semi) clean water to boil and drink if needed!

Google has a pretty cool tracker, too, with different maps you can overlay: http://crisislanding.appspot.com/

That's a good one! Thanks for sharing!

Re: Hurricane thread

I was OK most of the day - actually enjoyed a little shopping while most people stayed home. But now that I'm by myself and FH is working the night shift in Time Sq, I'm getting a little worried.

There are some very large trees outside. Just saw the news talking about all the trees coming down. I worked on the tornado response in Queens last year - and that was just a microburst

It doesn't help they just showed the eye is supposed to pass just over my neighborhood.

I'm sure everything will be fine. But for a few minutes there when I turned on the news, I got worried. I'll go back to watching scary movies about ghosts...
