Hurricane thread

Do we have one?

I'm starting to freak out because my FH is at a meeting for Town of Islip, and they might evacuate parts of the south shore. Apparently anything south of montauk hwy/main street in suffolk is going to be the worst. Thats where I am! lol where the heII would we go?

Re: Hurricane thread

ok I am sorry but this cracks me up - I am born and raised in florida - the hurricane capital of the world - you guys will be FINE

The news stations like to freak you out - and they cause mayhem and then it is all for nothing

have a hurricane party!

this is what we do in florida when we know hurricanes are-a- comin

IF IT GETS BAD ENOUGH (OVER CAT 2)

fill your washing machine with ice and beer (stays cold during power outtages and drains easy after power comes back on. Buy your fave canned goods, and get tons of batteries - candles and water bottles)

If you have your valuables in a room with windows move them into the bathroom or your closet (this is especially true for electronics AND LAP TOPS)

Also - dont tape your windows (THE TAPE RESIDUE NEVER COMES OFF- throw up boards to keep debris from flying through.

I went through hurricane Andrew in Miami and about 5 hurricanes a year throughout my high school.

This should be a nothing, but if it does turn to something - follow those tips and you will be a-ok.

Re: Hurricane thread

In my experience of hurricanes in NY (with the exception of Hurricane Gloria, which I don't remember anyway), they never live up to the hoop-la the newscasters talk about.

However, its always better to be prepared and safe, and then if its not bad after all, laugh later. But I don't think Irene is laughable just yet.

It's deff not a joke I agree! I'm worried more about the trees comming down and hitting cars and the after effects.. all the damage that can be made.. When Gloria hit people didnt take it sersiously either.. but people died from that and to this day my fathers boat still cannot be found when gloria hit ... luckly he wasnt in the boat when it happend tho

FH was born a month early during Hurricane Gloria! His mom went into early labor because of the air pressure from the hurricane!

I will be OK once I know more. It's the not knowing and over thinking that is making me so anxious!

Re: Hurricane thread

Whether someone is from FL or MS, or AL or other areas that are more often affected by big storms does not matter. Each storm should be taken seriously, even if it winds up moving further out to sea.

March 2010 we had a Nor'easter, a REALLY BAD ONE. We lost a 50 ft Evergreen that was over 50 yrs old. A tree lost a huge branch that crashed down onto power lines and through the roof of an XTERRA - totaled the car. The worst part though was that my entire apt complex lost power for over 2 days. It ****** and if this follows suit, this will suck more.

Just saying, if you are worried you are smart bc then you will be alert and taking precautions.

I do wish I had a washing machine of my own for beer and ice. lol

Re: Hurricane thread

my washing machine is in the basement of my building (co-op complex) and it likely will flood. I am going down to retrieve my luggage tomorrow before it gets really bad. Maybe I should stash some ice and beer in the washer while I am there! LOL

Re: Hurricane thread

I didn't even think of that! We just have the big coolers, but a washing machine filled with beer?!?!?!?!?! Genius!
