Does anyone have a Hybrid car? FH and I both have old cars (94 & 95) and we are thinking of replacing one of them (mine of course). After the wedding we are going to look at the Honda Civic Hybrid. Anyone have any feedback? TIA

Re: Hybrid Cars??
I will consider it in the future, but right now, I don't think all the bugs have been worked out yet. We read something in the paper recently about the Toyota Prius having problems with their batteries.

Re: Hybrid Cars??
DH works for toyota & has seen TONS of people buy the Prius. I don't know too much about the Honda, but supposedly toyota has better technology for the hybrids. I know that DH says he only sees them come in mostly for general maintenance, not too much for repairs or problems.
The only problem is, most of the time you have to order it. He works there & I would have had to wait 3 - 5 months when I bought my new car last February. We are now considering trading in his truck for a hybrid Lexus or Highlander, which also has to be ordered 3 - 5 months in advance.
ALSO, you get a tax deduction(?) of $2500 when you purchase a hybrid.
Wish I could have told you more about the Honda. Either way have fun shopping

I think I read that they were phasing this out, but maybe now that gas is so high they are keeping it?

Re: Hybrid Cars??
I drove a Prius for a few months last year as a work car. I loved it. It wasn't that much of a savings on gas - - especially if you were cruising. But, if you're in traffic, it does save on gas - - - only problem is that I used to obsess about the battery level and the anxiety was CRAZY!

Thanks for the info!! I know the Prius has been around longer but I don't like the way it looks. I would totally get the Highlander Hybrid if we could offer that. I know you have to order in advance so we are going to start checking them out after the wedding and that should give us plenty of time to save for a good down payment.

With these Hybrid cars, how do they work with the battery? I see mention of the anxiety over watching the battery level. Do you have to constantly charge it?

There have been conflicting stories in various media, but so far they are keeping it and NYS might be giving an additional state incentive, but nothing is final yet.

Re: Hybrid Cars??
We have a Prius- we bought it last October. I had to get used to pushing a button to turn it on instead of turning a key, and just to overall get used to the car, but I LOVE IT! It's actually my DH's car, but I love driving his car instead of mine when he's not around.
We got the tax credit last year which was very nice. It does require less gas. This may not be technically true, but from my understanding, at low speeds (like up to 15mph) you run on the battery (which is why you get better mileage around town rather than on the highway). Everytime you hit the brake, it recharges the battery. We've never had any problems with it so far- knock on wood.
Our biggest plus so far as to buying it is that we live in CA and they just passed a law that certain hybrids are allowed to drive in the HOV lane with only one person in the care- and the Prius is one of them. The deal is that they have to get a certain number of miles per gallon (I think it may have been 40mpg) to qualify for the HOV lane. For my husband, it cut his commute in half, which was reason enough to do it. Now, this won't last forever (they're saying 2 years). But hey, that's better than nothing. Other states have similar programs, but I'm not sure about NY.
Bottom-line, we love it. I would just suggest that you check the MPG of the hybrids vs. the MPG of the non-hybrid version of that car. In some cases, it wasn't that different....
Good luck!

Re: Hybrid Cars??
Before the Prius, honda had the Insight. It is a 2 seater hybrid, that you can still buy today. Now honda also has the civic and the accord hybrid. I have heard nothing but good things about the civic and the accord hybrid. I would buy the toyota prius over the honda models though. Toyotas are made better.....and all around a better car.....Just my opinion Scott

I really like the Toyota Prius (after being in a friend's) but I think I'll wait.

Glad to hear you have had no problems. The HOV thing is awesome for you guys!
If anyone is interested in upcoming hybrid cars go to www.hybridcars.com and they list all the hybrids in the works. There is a Porsche Cayenne in the works maybe I can get that
