Re: hypoallergenic dogs??
I recommend calling a veterinary clinic to ask about dog breeds that are better for people with allergies. I assume that short-haired breeds are best, though I've also heard that yorkies can be good for people with pet allergies.
The only non-barking dog breed I know of is the Basenji. (It does make some other sounds -- whines and howly noises and such -- but it does not bark.) Is your landlord a nice person? A pushover? If not, I wouldn't get a dog if I were you. Imagine the heartbreak if you got caught and had to give the dog away. Just my opinion, obviously, but I'd hate to see that happen!

The only 'barkless' dog that I know of is the Basenji (I'm probably spelling it wrong)...but it still makes some sort of noise (at least this is what a friend of mine told me who has one). It's NOT hypoallergenic.
I don't think there are any hypoallergenic dogs...my mother has severe asthma, and her MD told her NO DOGS...but then he said if you must there are really only 2 breeds that he could recommend: poodles and dachshunds. She had a poodle and was still sick with the asthma and allergies. We've had dachshunds now for over 18 years...but she is still sick..not as bad as with other dogs, but they all have dander (sp?) so that's what triggers allergies.
And dachshunds are anything BUT quiet! They are little yappers! I love them, but they definately bark a lot!

Our dachshund is so noisy! He yaps all the time. I wouldn't recommend one if they aren't allowed--I knew people who then had to give them up to the pound after they were found...In most complexes or apts. a landlord has a key, and what if there was a flood or something and they had to go in and they found the dog...

Greyhounds are supposedly hypoallergenic...and they are quite docile.

Re: hypoallergenic dogs??
rottweilers don't make alot of noise, but they are big and ours sheds SO much!
I think there is a new breed which is a cross between a poodle and a lab....you get the allergy relief of a poodle, but the temperment of the lab (which are EXTREMELY playful)...but I would think they were barkers

Re: hypoallergenic dogs??
My inlaws have a Bichon because one of the kids is highly allergic but wanted a dog. I believe Bichon or Poodle were recommended.
ETA: If you really aren't supposed to have a dog where you live, don't get one! What will you do with the dog if you get caught?
Kerry Blue terriers are great for allergy sufferers but I am not sure about the barking. I think they do bark though. Also Silky terriers, any poddle crosses should be ok, and of course hairless breeds.
