It's not tacky...it's just kind of boring.
Being honest here.
It's something people will use. I do think that you can get something a bit funkier though.

If you know of something each of them likes, I'd try to find a tote like that.

If you can't figure it out, just pick their favorite color and something that is not as plain and 'eh' as the ones in your OP.
