I am surprised by.....

I am surprised by.....

1. Exactly how many poopie diapers there really are. I think we go through at least 12 diapers a day all in all. And most of them are a mix. So be sure to buy lots of diapers. I am enjoying the Pampers Newborn Swaddlers.

2. Exactly how many wipes we go through. These are goin like hot cakes! In the hospital they used little washcloths, and that makes so much more sense....but now I have the wipe warmer, and the wipes are disposable which is so much easier. I finally went to Babies R Us and bought the big refill box to save a few dollars. Pampers Sensitive Touch

3. ALL THE LAUNDRY! One little preemie baby equals a load a day! How can it be? Between spitting up, pooping and peeing on everything, I guess it adds up. The terry changing pad cover, the burp pads, the onesies getting peed on after a clean diaper is being put on...lots and lots of laundry!

4. How many onesies I need. See above....the onesies get dirty fast. I have a 'poop up the back' baby so I guess this is why.

5. How much she sleeps. She sleeps after she eats and sometimes goes for 3 hours during the day - at night we have had some 4 hour stretches! And so soundly it's like she's been drugged! I often jostle her awake just because I think she sleeps too much. Stupid right? I am sure it wont' last and I'll be wishing for these days back.

6. How small our house got. It's like somebody shrunk it overnight. i guess it's the additions of the bouncy seat, bassinet, stroller, swing and so on - but even the rooms that are 'baby free' seem so cluttered now - and me and my husband can't get past each other without a collision.

7. How much I want to go to Starbucks and read the Times this morning! TTC'rs do it while you can! It's hard to be stuck inside the house all the time. With this weather, I wouldnt dream of taking her out. Sounds good for the first few days, but Mommy is starting to suffer from sever cabin fever! (I am going to sneak out for a manicure today....)

8. How many times I wash my hands. Invest in Purell in every room and some nice hand cream to cure the inevitable dryness.

9. The bleeding! Sorry if TMI but SOMEBODY's gotta say it. HELLO two and a half weeks later with the Always pad with wings. YUCK. (Oh and somebody should have mentioned the blood clots that happen early on. That was alarming. )

10. the fact that my bottom still feels like its going to fall off. I didn't even have any hemorrhoid problems and still my whole bottom half is just so sore (again TMI) and feels like somebody is pulling it off! Talk about recovery! And I hear the c-section is even worse recovery. How's a woman supposed to take care of a new baby when her bottom is coming off or her stomach is splitting open at the seams?!?! What kind of crazy blueprint was Nature working off of with this?!!

Just wanted to share. Those are my top 10 today.....oh and the bonus 11th ....

REGISTER FOR BATTERIES WHILE YOU STILL CAN! Who knew I would need stock in batteries by the gazillions?!?!?!?!? I need D's and Triple A's - 9 volts and it goes on and on!

I want to laugh and I dont want to laugh. Laugh because it's all soooo true and not laugh because Oh God I remember being a new Mom. Whew! NOTHING prepares you for the reality of living it.

It definitely gets easier!!

thanks Elizabeth and Claud for the votes of confidence! Its' so funny, my husband finally brought my computer system home for me to start doing the books from home. Everybody keeps saying - GOD - how much does that suck that you are already working from home? And I keep replying - you have NO IDEA HOW GREAT IT IS to do something I know how to do!!!!!! The bills, taxes and payroll have never looked so good! At least I know how to DO it, and I don't have to check to make sure the deposit slips are breathing!!!!!

I'll have to take some notes! Sounds like your doing a great job as being mommy though Jenny

Re: I am surprised by.....

You will too Dani - it's amazing how much of it comes kinda naturally - or actually it's amazing how patient the baby is when you are fumbling in the dark for the diaper tabs, or trying to manipulate the head around a boppy after 20 minutes of her waiting with her mouth patiently open! It's a team effort. Sometimes I think I can see her laughing at me on the inside....'you poor poor woman...thought being a career woman was hard......'

Along these same lines, I have to admit that I actually got butterflies in my tummy reading all of Jenny's 'reminders' - AND I'M NOT EVEN PREGGO YET! All of those 'new mommy' feelings of nervousness and insecurity came whizzing right back!

OMG, not only am I surprised by the thoroughness of your list, but, I'm amazed that you could even think straight!!!

LMAO!!! I swear, I STILL have preggo brain. Like wearing my sweatshirt inside out the other day. That *is* the style, isn't it?

I love your honesty and the way you write things out. I read this and even though it is surprising and scary at the same time, I can't wait to have kids. It will be a while before we start TTC but I am still excited.

def a great list....and YES man how your bottom hurts...

maybe TMI..but I was AFRAID to go to the bathroom! and how you realize that your boobs aren't yours OR HUBBY'S anymore!
they belong to the baby...so no perfume...no soaks in fragrant bubble baths,,, argh

glad those days are over...but I cant believe it is a YEAR AGO already.

Re: I am surprised by.....

Thanks for the insight. I remember after my niece was born, my sister said that she didn't realize how much she uses her butt until she gave birth. It hurt to sit for the first week.

BTW, why do you need so many batteries? I'm sorry for being ignorant.

Re: I am surprised by.....

Jenny - you are sooo right with all of that! I am still amazed every day that I managed to get through it and am still managing!! Sounds like you are doing a fantastic job!

Re: I am surprised by.....

Amen to That!!!

And Julybaby, dont feel ingorant, the batteries are for all the baby stuff (i.e. swing, bouncy seat, etc.). I wouldnt have known that either. They all take TONS of batteries. Registering for them is GREAT advice. You dont want to be caught without batteries for your swing!!

The butt part I did not know about, but all the mommies around me have said something along the lines of these that you have written here. Thanks for sharing.

Can I get an AMEN??!!! You ain't kidding Jenny!!! The bleeding lasted for me until almost 6 weeks!!!

As for the batteries!! Joe almost had a stroke when he came from CVS the day after we took Gianna home because he spent close to $50 on batteries!!!

Every single thing you said is oh so true!! But oh so worth it!!!

Re: I am surprised by.....

SO TRUE!!!!!!!!! Everything you said was SO TRUE!!!!!!!!!! I was dying when I read your post!!!

By the way, I also tried the baby wipes that you're using, and let me tell you - I found a BETTER wipe, that was softer, stronger, cheaper and was better for her little bottom! If you have a Costco's near you, get the Kirkland Baby Wipes!!! They come in a big carton, and they're FANTASTIC!!! Trust me!!!

And, as a side note, be careful with the baby wipe warmers - they tend to dry out the wipes (because of the heat), and that can lead to fires. Babies really don't need the wipes to be warm anyway, just soft.

Last note, the Pampers Swaddlers are great, aren't they??? Love the cloth feel and the stretchy sides! When you get to Stage 3, the closest to the Swaddlers are the Pampers Cruisers! Enjoy!!!!!!!!

Oh I LOVE the Swaddlers!! Thanks Lauren for telling me about the cruisers!! I was upset when I saw they only went up to size 2!!!
