What is with people wearing all black to a wedding? I don't get it. A wedding is supposed to be a happy occassion and so far I see so many people wearing black and I am the only person wearing something colorful. To me, black is for funerals, not for a wedding (unless it's black tie of course).
What am I missing? Am I wrong for asking my guests not to wear all black for my wedding? All this black is just so damn depressing.
I should note, my wedding is on a friday at 3pm.

I have to disagree with you. I love wearing black- I think it is so elegant and sophisticated. I think everyone should have thier 'little black dress'. I was going to get bm's dresses in black but my mil and friends thought we should get a color for pics. I know most people feel more confident wearing black.
I feel its your wedding and you have the right to not like people to wear black but I've seen it @ most events I go to.
I agree. I love it because it looks very classy, elegant and above all, SLIMMING!

Oh well. I guess I will sit at the table alone then with my non-black dress. I guess I just feel that black is a depressing color to wear to a wedding, whether it's slimming or not. But I wonder if its just a NY thing, cause I have seen a lot of photos of weddings not in NY and there was a lot less black.

I have to agree with that everyone said about black. It's very elegant and very pretty. Even if the wedding is at 3pm, I'd stil wear wite becuase most of the affair will be in the evening time. I unser\stand how you feel about black, but you can't tell people what towear, unless they ask!

I don't know. I've lived in California for about 4 1/2 years now, and I've seen A LOT of black and the weddings that I've been to. And we've been to a lot in the past few years. When I first moved out here, I thought it was bad to wear black to weddings, but now it's socially acceptable and I wear black almost all of the time to weddings.

My BMs are wearing black and I expect that lots of guests will too. It's a halloween wedding, but I think I would expect it anyway.
I think black makes a lot of women feel more sexy and slim and I wouldn't begrudge them of that.
For a daytime wedding I would probably not wear it, but I have two weddings coming up and I have a black dress for both.

It's totally a regional thing. I went to school in New England and they definitely don't do it up there and I mean every day stuff too - black just isn't a big a part of their wardrobe. When they do wear all black somewhere they joke that they have on their NY outfit.

Black is very elegant, and you can dress it up with fun, colorful jewelry. I don't wear it to daytime weddings usually. But a ceremony starting at 3, usually has a CH starting 5 or later, so I consider that night and would probably wear black. A lot of my black dresses have color in them (one has a pink sash, one has red flowers...so they're not all plain)

Yes you are wrong to 'ask people not to wear black to your wedding' - You don't have the right to tell your guests what colors they can and can not wear !! And the whole idea of 'black being for funerals' - This is not 1952 - Black is classic, elegant, and ALWAYS in style People can wear whatever they want !!!

Yes, I think NYC is the 'wear all black' capital of the world!

Oh, I thought you were. You had a lot of exclamation points there.
Anyway, I was not into controlling exactly what people are wearing, just asking them notto wear all black. I mean is that so bad? I see 'black tie required' on a lot of invitations. Why not 'no black please'?

i like black but try not to wear it to weddings unless it is a black tie event. i also don't wear all black to a funeral unless i am a relative of the deceased. i guess i'm more traditional that way...

I don't think that it's a good idea to inform your guests of 'no black outfits'. I agree with the girls: black is elegant, classy & never goes out of style. I think it's a little controlling that one would prohibit what a person wears. It's like telling an invitee who to bring for their 'and 1's'. Not cool.
However, I definitely understand where you're coming from.. black can be interpretted for funeral-wear, but so can a mood and accessories. If a person is wearing that 'black dress' with red bumps, and colorful accessories, while showing so much cheer, then it doesn't say 'funeral' anymore.
