I got laid off...

I got laid off...

Hi All,
I know this has happened to people on the board, as well as to their FHs. I have worked for the same company for five years. I wasn't 'surprised'--just shocked that it came out of nowhere. I was told it wasn't a personal thing. It had nothing to do with my work, which was very good. It was just accounting. But still, I wasn't happy to have this go on, as we will have to postpone wedding plans for a while. Which is ok, as long as we are together. I am just worried about finding work. Wondering if I want to change my career path. Ugh--I'm trying not to get depressed. HELP. I wanted to leave this job anyway, but with the future so right on top of us...bills, wedding, plans, etc...

Re: I got laid off...

Thank you all for your kind words. I admit, I walked out of the building with a smile. I guess it's better to leave with severance and the ability to get unemployment vs. quitting or getting fired and walking out with nothing. But still. We were just going to put a deposit on the reception site. I am glad we didn't. I want to be able to pay for everything and not stress about money. My FH is SO supportive. But still...I just look at the dog and worry about feeding her. I KNOW--drama queen :-) But still, I know it will be ok. It is just so new...

What did you do? Look online, go to a recruiter? I don't even know where to start. I came into this job right out of school. So I am starting at square one again.

Re: I got laid off...

I have been a copy editor/Web editor/Web radio producer and print writer--all at the same company. I am contemplating a change of career. I got into journalism right out of school because I did the whole college paper/yearbook editor thing :-) I would love to go back to school, but that's a price tag without a salary...

I'm with you, sweetie. Believe me, this is a rough .... But the good news is .... you'll get through it!

You're saying that a career change may be in order ... this is the time to reevaluate! You'd never have considered changing if this hadn't happened. When it happened to my FH, we were devestated, 7 years in ... just before our Christmas wedding, lost our Dec. salary, bonus, etc.

BUT .... he got a job w/ a competitor making more money & a title promotion!

It always works out! Be honest with yourself ... find the job that makes you happy ... and trust that you will always be where you are supposed to be.

You've been given a gift, now take advantage of it!: EMO5:

Stay positive, post when you need a boost ... we're pulling for you!

A ton of hugs!

Thank you...that is great advice. I'm glad your hubby found work and the title he deserved. And it all happening before your Dec. Wedding. YIKES. But, as you said, it all worked out.

It is the market... the economy is so bad. So many people are going through it, myself included... relax... Use the time to go to the gym every morning and be in the best shape of your life. Realize now that your full time job will be to get a job.... This is just a fire drill... not a fire. Everything will be fine... You'll be laughing about this someday soon- even if hard to believe now. Chin up.

Re: I got laid off...

Oh, you are Sept20! We were shooting for Sept. 21 :-) Ok, we still are. But we'll see. Did anyone have to deal with Cobra health insurance? I want to go on my FHs insurance as a domestic partner (or who knows, we might elope), but my parents flipped when I told them that. They said I should take Cobra...

I wish you luck on your search!!

Re: I got laid off...

Well you def need some sort of insurance. I took cobra. My mother says that the most expensive place a person can be is sitting in a hospital, an emergency room without insurance. They will charge you whatever they deem necessary. Bills could be our weddings combined! I would go on Cobra if I were you, although I think that costs a few hundred a month. I didn't even realize you could go on fh's insurance.

Re: I got laid off...

He works for the NYPD. They have domestic partner clause. So being we live together, I can go under his Aetna. So we will pay the regular amount vs. $300 a month. But my mom was spazzing b/c she wants me to have my 'own' insurance. I think it's a fiance issue, not an insurance issue. So I figure as long as I have FULL coverage, I'm ok. And better it be $20-$30 a month vs. $300. But she insists on Cobra.

Re: I got laid off...

Also you will still get Sept 21 (don't worry). People who can do it pull together weddings in three months. I wish I was. I think a year is too long. If I were to do it over, seven-eight months. I'm going out of my mind with how much time I have left. This was FI's idea...
