I know what you mean. My FH wants to get it all done with. I do to..but then yes...you sit and brew for half a year or more and just want the day to come.

Re: I got laid off...

Okay just kidding- I changed my mind. You have an option of basically getting FREE insurance. I would JUMP at that... You have to take the insurance through your FI. And Aetna- too good to pass up!!!

Re: I got laid off...

SEE, that's what I SAID. My mom was like, 'oh my god, your dad and I are so upset that you said that. You should take Cobra b/c if you don't you will lose it. And it's your OWN insurance.' I don't get why she is upset. She loved my FH until we got engaged, so I think it's stemmed in that. :-) BUT--my thinking is that by Feb. 15, when I will have to choose, I will find my path and get myself going and get insurance at a new job. Not worry about Cobra or FH's Aetna, etc.

Re: I got laid off...

Ummm, I just have one more thing to say.. really, I beg of you- don't be too hard on yourself. It's hard because you have some free time, but remember that you are human, you did a good job at your last position, and most of us have lost their positions or changed jobs at one time or another. It's just your turn. Like chicken pocs.

Re: I got laid off...

Thank you for saying that. Seriously. It's good to hear that other people have gone through this. I was so elated when I walked out of work. Then reality hit--after the Cosmo I had ;-) But I think we will be ok. I do.

Re: I got laid off...

Is she really into you being independent? Because I am making decisions now, kind of laying out my life with my FI and I don't think the decisions are what my parents had in mind. Example, My parents wanted me to go to law school. But I figure, I don't want to work after I have children (some years from now), so I am not going to. Instead, I'm going to take a position that offers a job that pays money that will allow us to buy a house. I know its not always going to be what they wanted. But I am doing what makes sense for the life we are creating... financially. Sounds like you are too.

Re: I got laid off...

Yes. We are paying off bills, making our plans. She loved him until we got engaged. His word was better than mine until the ring was on my finger. Now, for the past year, she's been on me about every, single, little thing. Every decision. Suddenly I am stupid and he's incapable of...well, anything. Also, his job as an NYPD Detective (just promoted, yay) freaks her out. Initially it was good, I was protected. Then all of the sudden she thinks it's dangerous, he coudl get killed, he won't make any money or ever be home for me and the kids. Some of those things are true, some aren't at all. My FH and I go to therapy together, work on any issues, we laugh and talk. We have a great time. He's my best friend. So to me, that's everything. And she doesn't see it. Doesn't like that I am calling my own shots. For me. For my life with my FH.

Re: I got laid off...

Beth do you do copywriting? We are looking for a consultant to do this for us. We seem to find the worst of the worst out there. I also am always working with a proofreader. My favorite lives in Florida which makes it difficult when I am on deadlines. Forum mail me if you are interested.

It will all work out for the best for you. Good Luck

Re: I got laid off...

Dsilvers,
I am sorry you got laid off. Something good will come of this. Have you tried contacting the human resources departments of publishing companies? I work for a Time Inc. publication and HR is instrumental in filling many positions. I also got my job right out of college and never had the experience of sending out resumes (which is rare in journalism) so I know how freaked out you must be. I will check the job postings on our companies intranet site tomorrow. If you want forum mail me with your experience level so I can forward you the info on any openings. Also, have you tried mediabistro.com?
Good luck.

Re: I got laid off...

Dsilvers, if you go on your fh's insurance just make sure that it is considered as you being covered by insurance. I know that when you get a new job the new company's insurance company will want to know that you have been insured for the few months before going on their new plan.

I had the same thing happen to me after september 11th and I wound up in a better job where I am much happier. This is just a little jolt but don't let it get you down. You will look back on it and know that there was a reason why this happened now and it is a good reason. Take advantage of this time. I used the internet and recuiters and in the end found a job through a former classmate who worked at a firm and they passed my resume on to the recruiting director. Things will get better! good luck!

Re: I got laid off...

So sorry to hear about your job but something better will come along.

About going on your FH's plan. I am a Benefits Specialist and we cover domestic partners but we require some very strict documentation. You want to make sure of all of the requirements before you elect not to take Cobra b/c once you deny Cobra you cannot get it back. If you any questions, please let me know. Bottom line - if you can get coverage under your FH thats the best way to go. Cobra is very very expensive.

Also, forum e-mail me your resume. I am in the human resources department of a publishing company. I dont know if we are hiring any copy writers but I can pass your resume along.
