Fired today from my job. The HR rep called me in and said 'about 5 people have come to me and told me you were looking for a job' I did not deny it becasue I am looking for a new job. She then gave me the option of giving my 2 weeks notice or leaving next Friday and getting 2 weeks severance. What timing, we just got married and we just put a bid in today on a house. I guess it may be a blessing in disguise becasue those two weeks that I am getting severance for, I can really dedicate that time to interviewing and finding a job.....to be continued........

I suppose you were an at will employee..but grounds for dismissal may not be for what you were fired for.
Do you have an employee manual?
You could sue for wrongful termination. I don't know if looking for a job is grounds.
Maybe an HR person could help with this.
It also may be a blessing in disguise. I was w/o a job when we closed on our house.
i agree! i don't know what the law is down there but i had an ex-coworker get terminated for looking for a job up here. he spoke to unemployment and they said he should contact an attorney because he technically was still doing his job! and the fact that they asked you to put in your 2 weeks notice seems fishy. as if trying to make you uneligible for unemployment benefits.
so sorry this happened to you...but at least it happend after the wedding...

Re: I got
You'd be surprised it's probably the same people you talk to at work that snitched you out. That's why I keep personal/family things to myself so people can't use it against me

Re: I got
Sorry to hear this
Still I agree sounds fishy
I'd check on the lawfulness of this dismissal.
if you WEREN'T looking for a job then they are unjustly firing on hearsay
Most employment is an 'at will' state but that doesnt really mean they can fire you without cause.
Good Luck job hunting.

Wonderful news!!
And I will say it again, nothing happens just because, there is a reason for everything. Of course, we're not clairvoyant so that reason may not be obvious right now, but I know it's for the best. Hope you find a better job - soon!! And may great things come your way!!

that sounds illegal to me.... if they can fired you for looking for another job - everyone would get fired.

That's just what I was thinking!! Doesn't everyone have the right to seek better employment?

When you are an at will employee, they can fire you for anything as long as it is not illegal. From what I understand, the only illegal thing to get fired for is being a woman, being gay, refusing sexual advances, etc
I guess I am out of luck but I am going to find a better job so mo worries on my end. I actually have an interview today

You were fired because you are looking for another job!!! Oh boy that *****. I should have been fired soooo many times if that was the case at all jobs. Wow - that is ballsy of someone to snitch like that. Why would they something? Were you having problems at work?

Congrats on the house.
I work in HR, and as far as your termination, there is nothing illegal about it. Employment at will means that an employer can terminate your employment for any reason, at any time, as long as it is not for discriminatory reason. This is the same as an employee giving two weeks notice, and the employer saying, 'that's ok, we don't need you any longer, today is your last day'. In a lot of employers, when it becomes known that you are leaving/looking to leave, you can appear to be a liability. You no longer have a commitment to the organization, and the employer may do what is necessary to protect there assets, including proprietary information.
At the same time, employment at will means that you, as the employee, can also terminate employment with an employer at any time for any reason.
Most people don't realize that employment at will works both ways. You are not 'locked' into an employer by any sort of contract. You are free to go whenever you please.

Yes, that was the gist of my above post. Thanks for all the good info. I wish my old employer knew 5 other people were also looking for jobs right now, they would not be able to stay in business if they fired all of those people. Oh well, que sera, sera

I got a job offer. I was offered $3,000 more than I was making plus a 1,000 sign on bonus. I think I may take it but I am going to ask for more $$. I knew it would all work out. Thanks girls
