I usually get bonds from the bank - you spend $50 and get a $100 bond.

I do savings bonds too. I think they're practical, they can stash them away for college!

Ive never bought a bind - how do I do that? Just go to the bank and ask for one? How does it work? They wait until theyre a certain age and then they can cash it?

I usually give bonds, but my SIL's brother opened one of those education funds for the girls so they encourage us to contribute to that.

Re: I have 3 christenings to go to this summer. What do you give as gifts?

I would never give a bond anymore. I went to the bank to get one for my Goddaughter andit would take more than 18 years to mature!!

To me, it was easier for everyone to give cash.....I usually give $100 if I am pretty close to the family....

Re: I have 3 christenings to go to this summer. What do you give as gifts?

Last time I went to the bank to buy a bond, they needed the recipients social, or the parents social. Being the way things are today...I feel weird asking for it unless its family. So I just give cash.

I know this sounds weird, but when I was christened someone gave me ten shares of McDonalds stock(very cheap at the time) I still have those ten and they are worth 13 times what the family bought them for. So shares of some stock that is up and coming might be an idea too. While very different....(I know my parents thought my gift was odd at the time, but now very profitable) Its neat and different

Yeah this is really smart... MUCH better returns than bonds... Iknow bonds were popular when we were babies but there are so many better investment vehicles available now that people can use as gifts.
