I usually give $ and/or personalized gift (nice frame, etc) depending on how close I am to the family.

Ive never bought a bind - how do I do that? Just go to the bank and ask for one? How does it work? They wait until theyre a certain age and then they can cash it?

You just go to the bank and get them. They can use your SS# if you don't have the baby's SS#, but they don't print it anywhere on the bond. I've done this lots of times and everyone seems happy with them. The smart thing for them to do is to just put it in a safe deposit box and forget about it for 18 years, then use them towards a car/college/etc.

Oh, and you need the parents' mailing address when you go to get the bonds.

I would never give a bond anymore. I went to the bank to get one for my Goddaughter andit would take more than 18 years to mature!!

To me, it was easier for everyone to give cash.....I usually give $100 if I am pretty close to the family....

Give them money to put in a bank account. I work for a financial company and although in the past bonds were great to give they're pretty much worth nothing once they cash them in.
