I have 5 different options for my guests as far as food ... do i need to have a menu, or is it unnecessary?
I'm hoping for the latter so i can save a bit of money there.
choices will be the usual: some kind of steak, some kind of chicken, some kind of fish, shrimp, vegetarian

I feel it is important because you are having five menu options, that is only my opinion though.

I think it totally depends on your guests. We have a few friends with dietary restrictions so I decided to make one because on top of the fish and eggplant rollatini that I chose the RH also said they would make a pasta with steamed veggies for people who didnt eat fish or didn't like eggplant, but thats not something the waiter would specifically say so I want to make it clear for everyone. We just went to a wedding with 3 choices, there was no menu and it was not an issue at all so I think you should be fine.

I'm doing one b/c my family likes food and they want to see what their options are as soon as they sit down!
Also - I feel like people forget the choices, or don't like to be put on the spot and like to think about what they're having beforehand.
But they are DEFINITELY not necessary!

Not necessary cause the RH might supply them or do them for not much $$.....and you can do them yourself to save $$$

LOL so the poll is now at 4 yes's and 4 no's ... doesn't really help too much
I will speak with the RH to see if they provide one ... if not, i will consider making my own ... we'll see ... still have plenty of time

With so many choices, I Would recommend having one. Does your catering hall supply them for free? They may do 1/table

I really like the idea of having a menu because it gives your guests the ability to sit down and think about what they want to eat instead of having the waiter come around and blurt out quickly what the options are. However if you would like to save money and you are choosing this as a way to save I think its fine.

i think they're completely unnecessary but if you can fit it into your budget then i would do it

I think it depends on how detailed the choices are and how your guests are.
If it is just chicken marsala - its pretty straight forward. If it is seared cod fish encrusted with pistachios with a sweet blahblah sauce then maybe it would entice the foodies a little more :)

it's soooo so easy to make your own menus. i like reading choices, and it's easier to pick out when you have all the names of the meals in front of you.

I think menus are optional. The waiter/waitress will read off the options to your guest.
I plan on having them bc I think they are a nice touch but I don't think they are necessary

Menu's aren't a must. But then again you do have quite a few food selections so I would probably go with making the menu's,,,

Personally I like the menu idea because the other option is for the waiter to state the choices to each person.... and it's like deciding on the fly. I tend to make bad food choices that way sometimes.
What if you just do 1 menu per table instead of per person or per couple?
I think all you really need is 1 per table. You can print it at home and save a bunch of money that way.

ITA! I think having one menu for the entire table is a great comprimise.
I feel badly for that waiter who would have to repeat 5 different menu choices 10 times so everyone can hear and choose. Also, I'm a picky eater so I like to look at the menu and see what I'm about to order rather than being put on the spot.
