my polls, I am just trying to get a consensus . . . here's another . . . those 35 years of age and younger that own a house on LI, how did you come up with a down payment?

Re: I hope no one minds . . .
I didn't answer the poll since I fall into a couple categories:
we saved we got a 'gift' from my parents we also borrowed a bit from them to get to 20% down

We haven't bought a home yet, but we will definitely be saving for a while.

We are moving in my parent's basement after the wedding (we have an apartment now, but are not allowed to live in sin in front of them ) and won't be charged rent. We are going to stay there for at least 2 years to save save save so that we can have a HUGE downpayment so that we have options when we have children.

I had some money saved and we used our wedding presents from our family to make up the difference.

I did not vote because none of the categories applied. We used the gifts from the wedding, $10,000 from my husband's savings, and I cashed in some of my stock portfolio from when I was a child.

We saved and saved but still didn't put down 20% so we also have a pretty high mortgage.

People think I'm joking when I say Martha Stewart paid for our DP , but my DH had made a commission from a Martha Stewart deal for Kmart that basically covered the DP.

Re: I hope no one minds . . .
My DH sold his house and made a lot of money on it and I sold some stocks for my share. We put 20% down so we didn't have to pay PMI. The nice thing though is that we don't live in NY so our taxes aren't outrageous. Real estate is still somewhat high hear but property tax is normal.

Re: I hope no one minds . . .
I was very lucky. I didn't meet DH till I was 31 and I had a bit in the bank, but not nearly enough for a down payment, and not as much as I should have had at my age. I was more focused on having fun, enjoying my 20s, and I took a few nice vacations and paid cash for them all. In hindsight, I wish I'd saved more but then again I moved out on my own as soon as I finished college and really struggled for a few years. But I do have a lot of money in my retirement accounts, a lot more than DH, so I feel like I am contributing.
I say I am lucky because DH is a saver and his parents also sold their home and gave him a very generous amount of money, which he saved. That is our down payment, and the money I have left will help us build our savings back up.
